Adding a 2nd Hard Drive to a iMac 2011?

Hi,

I have read that it's possibe to add a second hard drive to the iMac mid 2011. There is supposed to be an extra 2,5" drive bay in the new iMac, i just can't find any directions how to add a new drive in this slot. Does the bay have a connector ready for the added device or do you need some kind of cable for it? And how about the temp sensor issues with the fans going crazy like in the case when try replacing the original main drive.

Please give us the last three figures of your serial number so we know exactly which machine you have.

I found this very usefull: http://blog.chargedpc.com/2011/05/2011-i...

I called my local apple service and they charge a 125$ for the parts needed and a 200$ for the whole installation. I think that it's very reasonable and then the warranty is'nt void eighter.

Got the SSD installed by a apple certified technician in a local apple dealer, the cost was under 200$, exactly 139€. And WOW its fast! The SSD installed is a "OCZ Vertex 3 120GB Max IOPS".

You can't simply drop a new drive in the new iMacs. Do some reading first. Here's where to start: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/turnkey/i...

A clip of one of the links you've pasted: "adding hard drives or SSDs in addition to the main hard drive are still perfectly viable and working options in our testing so far", so YES you can simply drop a SECOND drive in the new iMac. Im not going to replace the original 3,5" drive, just add one 2,5" SSD along the main drive.

And some more text from the links: What’s different between the power connection/leads for the HD bay vs. the other bays:

First, note that the HD bay has a different power connection with seven total leads, two of which are used for thermal feedback. Normal SATA power connections, including those going to the SSD and optical bay in the 2011 iMacs, utilize five total leads.

You're doing great, I'd really like to see Apple come out with a guideline on upgrades on these machines.

There is no 2nd bay unless you orderd the iMac with an SSD. You can however put a 2nd 2.5 inches drive with a few cables easy to find. There are a lot of guides available for this purpose (search for "install SSD in iMac 2011" in google)
