Wich version is it? Can't see the ssd port. Any trouble booting the new CPU?

da

Lisandro - This version of the logic board does not have the Blade SSD socket. So it can only support the one SATA drive.

As to the CPU as long as Ted uses what this series offered for a CPU option he's good!

da

@yddet98 - Thanks for showing us the 21.4 4K i3 boards are socketed, good to know!

1 TB 2.5" SATA SSD

i7 7700, no overclock and 32 GB RAM

As long as you have the Retina 4K version of the 2019 iMacs, you can upgrade the CPU to ‘theoretically’ anything in the Intel 8th and 9th gen line.

If any of you want to actually put your 'wise words' to work, you will see that someone on Youtube has already upgraded their 21.5” to a 9900T.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_conti...

8 Cores, but a lower TDP.

Yes, it works. Yes, it can be done.

How well does it work? There was no update video over the last 4 months, so I imagine nothing broke.

Does that mean the rest of 9 series will work? Theoretically now looks a lot more like very possibly.

Will there be issues with TDP or other issues? I don't know because I 'HAVEN'T TRIED IT' and I wish others would preface their comments the same and quit spamming every question with answers they pulled from 3 seconds of googling Apple’s specifications pages.

Yes, But… You'll need very special tools if the CPU is mounted via BGA. Otherwise, if it's mounted via socket, you can upgrade it to a later version as long as the CPU structure and pin arrangement is the same as the original.

However, be warned that opening the Mac will void your warranty. You can't get Apple components for replacement easily, because Apple keeps those under wraps and exclusively avaliable for licensed Apple technicians only, so definitely don't damage anything!

Good luck.

as long as the new CPU structure and pin arrangement remains the same, there is no problem upgrading from a 8700k i7 to an 9th gen i9 ?

da

Sorry for the REALLY late reply, I'm very busy trying to raise money to start my business in repairing video game consoles.

Yep, basically. And if it doesn't work, you've probably got an incompatible CPU. However, I am quite certain the structure would be different if it wasn't compatible. Therefore, you should be fine as long as, like you said, the structure is the same.

da

You are wrong Sterling, for newer CPUs you will still need BIOS update for them to work.

you cant use Gen9 on Gen8 without bios update . even they are the same structure and work on the same board. and there is no way Apple will give you that bios.

da

@uhrwerkkwx - The 4K models have a socket the lower end systems tend to be soldered CPU's in the 21.5" iMac's.

Intel's i9's can't be used in this series as the TDP is so high for the system and the systems firmware won't support it. Unlike Windows PC's you can't alter the systems firmware. Each generation of CPU requires different micro-code which is what holds you back here.

da

@danj Ah, I suspected. Apple machines tend to differ model to model but for the most part (if I'm not mistaken) they can be CPU upgraded as long as Apple's product specifications state it. But as you said, they do change the firmware compatibility a lot, and so it can be hard to CPU upgrade if you don't know what you are working with. Thanks for the correction, I can sometimes make small mistakes like that.

Yes it can. It uses a regular intel 8th-9th gen wicket with a Q370 chipset. Idk how the cooling will handle let’s say a 9900K, but it is possible

Very true! The chipset supports the better chip. But that's the easy part ;-}

The micro-code within the systems BIOS needs to support the chip. This is where we have an issue with the iMacs unlike many Windows systems. You also have power and cooling issues going any higher than what the system is able to support.

I have an iMac19,2 and I want to upgrade to a 9900, but I'm afraid that it won't boot because of that. my current 8100 is very slow and an 8700 is very overpriced currently.

The best CPU your system will support is this I7-8700 which you could upgrade your system to! Have you priced out the CPU yet?

What is with the i3 Quad Core. Can i Upgrade to an i7 or i9?

I don’t know it the same with the upper Answers. What Kind of CPU I can Upgrade.

For example a i7 8700 or a i7 8700k ?

I bought an SSD and a larger Ram and would like to change the CPU right away.

My basic configuration is an iMac 4k, 21 inch, i3 quad core, 1TB HDD and 16 Gb Ram.

Thank you in advance for your answers.

if the ssd you've bought is an m.2 ssd, the imac you have does not support m.2 (because you bought the 1tb hdd).

in the CPU topic, the problem is the TDP, find the stock TDP on your cpu and buy one with the same (the power supply is designed to deliver certain amount of power) or lower TDP.

Hi, bought a normal SSD. I had already read it. Can someone tell me which CPU I can use at most. I have currently installed the i3 Quad core as a base model. Have read that the i7 8700 or the i7 7700 works? Before I make a bad purchase now, do I ask for information? Can anyone recommend cheap Ram memory?

Hello,

I’m planning to upgrade my 21.5 inch sometime this month, Thought I would mention that the wattage of the PSU is only 185 watts. If you have any variant with the AMD Radeon Pro 560X (75W) and install the 8700k (95W), you may be inadvertently putting unnecessary load on the iMacs power supply. In saying that varies articles do state that at max load the CPU should only draw around 87 watts.

That combined with the rating for the X570 (75W) means that at peak, want to emphasize the PEAK part. Your max load wattage will be around the ballpark of 175W. Its less 170 watts, but added a few watts for ram and HDD and also increases with fan rpm.

If you have the Radeon Pro Vega 20 with 4GB of HBM2 memory, you may be over that threshold as it uses 100W opposed the 75W of the 560X

I will let you guys know how I go with the upgrade once i have completed it.

Hey, i’m just a noob, i bought the Apple iMac 21.5-Inch "Core i3" 3.6 (4K, 2019), i want to do a decent upgrade, a round 500 USD, i want to upgrade ram and CPU. I was thinking about i5 but the especification of wich are optimal for my pc are very hard to understand for me. Would you recommend to upgrade that or other things, i use my mac for photo editing, video editing and web design.

PD: i’m going to get proffesional advice, but you guys sound like you could guide me well. I’m not installing it by myself.

I would upgrade ram and cpu to i5 8500, If you want to keep TDP down you will be using non K intel chips. The difference between the 8700, 8500 or even 8600 intel chips aren't very much. Nothing that you should notice anyway. I would also strongly recommend you upgrade the SSD in the machine. I have noticed I got more gains from my ssd than i did anything.

Hi there!

I’m getting some parts for a 2019 iMac 21.5” 4k retina (19,2 model). Base model with a 3.6GHz i3 qcore, 8GB RAM and 1TB non fusion HDD.

So far I got OWC 2x 16GB RAM and 1TB Crucial MX500 SSD ready to be installed. Now that I’m getting the thing stripped I’m considering also a CPU upgrade and have looked at the i7 8700 (non K) which has the same TDP 65w and is supposed to fit in the LGA1151 socket…

Whereas SSD and RAM seem pretty straight forward the CPU bit makes me doubt… I’m lazy when it comes to reinstall ios and apps so I’d like to know if this is necessary after a CPU change or just by having the SSD cloned from the HDD will do. I have already booted the iMac using the new SSD SATA-USB connected and besides MS Office, everything else is working just fine… BTW MS Office just requires signing in your MS account and reinstall it, don’t even need the activation key.

I appreciate any comments regarding the CPU upgrade and the effect on ios, thanks a lot!

The CPU will have zero effect on Mac OSX data. When you finish the cpu upgrade (assuming your cpu is compatible) your system will boot up like nothing ever happened and will show the new cpu listed under About This Mac.

Just clone your drive over to the new SSD or do a time machine backup and you are good to go!

@zackattack011

Thanks for that!
