iPhone reboot, error 29, gas gauge errors

I have an iPhone 3GS and a little while back it began rebooting when the battery was around 20%. I bought another battery, off of eBay, with the same APN , but now it reboots almost every 5 minutes. But sometimes after killing the battery entirely and having to resync with iTunes, may run fine for the entire day until needing recharged. So I bought another battery off of eBay through another seller and the problem persisted so I put the factory battery back in and it does exactly the same. Any ideas? I am waiting for iPhone 5 and using my wife's old 3G and am hating how slow it is with iOS 4 on it.

That error could indicate a hardware issue. Have you had the iPhone in a place where i can become overheated? Have you tried restoring completely wiping all apps/info off the phone? What type of voltage battery are you using (3.7V-3G/ 3.7V 4.51Whr-3GS)?

Take a look at this website from Apple, it describes in detail on what each error means and how it can be resolved.

Update

Usually when you receive possible hardware errors it means something, somewhere has stopped working. And my guess is that it is the logic board. As with all electronic devices ever made, they all have the slight chance to stop working for absolutely no reason at all. I bought a brand new video camera once from JB HI-FI, got home and for some reason it would turn on and off when it felt like it from the very first time i pressed the power button. Why? Who knows. But logic board hardware issues are pretty much impossible to fix unless you have very skilled soldering skills and aloooooot of patience.

If you have gone through all of the steps on the apple link, then it doesn't look good. I wouldn't bother buying a new logic board either because it will most likely be someone else's faulty part they wish to sell off cheap. Personally i would go and buy a cheap Nokia - nice and cheap, very sturdy and reliable and wait until the launch of the beautiful iPhone 5 :)

Well, thank you again, that was pretty much where I was going with the thought of what needs replaced. Right now I am using my wife's old iPhone 3G, it is just so slow. Well I guess just wait until the rumored September. Thanks.

Thank you for the quick reply, I have multiple batteries, all of them are 3.7V 4.51 Whr.

The only place my iPhone 3GS has been is in my pocket, though I work outside I have never exposed my phone to any moisture, maybe the possibility of a little sweat, never had anything wet, just the surface of the glass. I have been through Apple's Documents but can't really solve the error 29. Used iRecovery and it said bad gas gauge. Anything cheap you think I can buy to make it work until iPhone 5?

Any case resulting in iPhone reboot may be fixed with iPhone recovery mode. I know the best and easiest way to enter and exit iPhone recovery mode is to use ReiBoot. A free ware to put iPhone into or out of recovery mode with one click.
