Difference between optical drives in iFixit-Store?

A1286 2.66GHz 15" Unibody MacBook Pro (MB985LL-A)

Hi there,

my optical drive died over the last months - after reading discussions on several forums about cleaning the lens, I tried that, but now it rejects every disc (regardless whether CD-ROM or DVD) so I'm going to exchange it.

As it seems that the original Matshita UJ-868 isn't available anymore, I try to get a replacement here. Within the iFixit store, I found two drives which seem to fit:

Unibody (Post-Early 2009) 8x SATA SuperDrive

and

MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Mid 2009-Mid 2012) 8x SATA SuperDrive (Used)

both warning that they have different screw holes and/or a different connector.

Now the question: Are they both suitable for above-mentioned MacBook Pro?

Best regards & TIA from Germany,

Daniel

If I am correct, this is your machine:

Apple MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.66 15" Mid-2010 Specs

Identifiers: Mid-2010 15" - MC373LL/A - MacBookPro6,2 - A1286 - 2353*

It's still under warranty, why not let Apple fix it for free?

Thanks for your answer.

The computer is actually a 1,66 GHz Core2Duo MacBook Pro 5,3 from Mid-2009 and not Mid-2010. While entering that question, I already noticed that iFixit's model codes seem to be somewhat inconsistent...

As the computer is nearly 2 years old, there's of course no warranty left and despite the fact that there's a huge number of drives dying, I guess Apple won't set up an extended guarantee programm. :-(

Go with a Apple part number 661-5147. Here's a bunch of them: http://www.google.com/search?client=safa...
