Is it possible to clone my MacBook 13" 2008 running 10.6.8 & bootcamp

is it possible to clone my mac book 13" 2008 running 10.6.8 & bootcamp windows 7

onto an external ssd (purchased from ifixit - for. my 2011 mbp)

and install that new drive on my early 13" 2011 mac book pro?

(my goal is to keep this laptop offline - run windows 7 quicken 7 & office whatever works that doesn’t force me into a subscription or having to go online) I have both office 2008 & office 2013 paid for rarely used

I used another new to me mac book pro 2015 for online use

@nan_c be aware that after you clone the drive and use it on another machine, MS Office might notice you're using the same license on two machines, which will force you to buy another copy. The 2018 MacOS version is on Amazon for $100ish (not subscription based)

I talked to microsoft and they tell me that even a stand alone copy requires that I go online once a month. I will only be using it on one machine. (clearing out the old for the less old)

Even after paying for 2 versions doing an update (at that time) then going offline for good, I get alerts telling me that I don't have a genuine version of windows.

@nan_c

Short answer: Yes. Although, it’s not super easy.

The best way is to use Winclone which will cost you $40. You then should be able to clone a disk image onto an external SSD like you said, then restore from that disk image on the 2011 MPB.

Here is the thread that I referenced: Cloning HDD

If you need any further help or explanation, the thread should explain it. If not, drop a comment below!

Let me know if this helps!

Hi Alex, thanks for your replies & support. Since I posted I was able to clone to my new ssd by putting it in the external case (in ifixit kit) then cloning (restoring) via disk utility. Found the information on the crucial website.

I booted from it externally (not something they suggested in the video or the instructions) Yipppee! Wow is it fast.

Took 2.5 hrs to clone about 121 gb of os & data. I didn't need any third party software.

RE: Bootcamp clone - There is alot of conflicting information about whether or not & how to clone a bootcamp partition. Would love to hear if anyone has gone through that process with a late 2008 mac book running 10.6.8 / windows 7.

Then maybe I won't run into the problem you warned me about (by keeping everything microsoft on the same machine)

PS... other people mentioned getting bogged down by error messages after cloning. Luckily, I had no problems using excel for mac on the cloned external ssd. Hope it stays good after putting it in the mac book!

Thanks again

Hi again! Have you done this? Were you able to clone then entire os with bootcamp partion & windows ?

Hi Alex, I checked out winclone, for my model & os 10.6.8 it says winclone 3 but it bumps me to winclone 7 (for mojave) so I am still hunting & waiting for their reply.

@nan_c sounds like you are doing everything right so far. I've never personally used Winclone just because I haven't used a dual boot mac (even though I have been meaning to) Let me know if winclone works for you

da

so far it is winclone !&&*. Paid, can't use it on my offline 2008 (the only one I have bootcamp on) They aren't big on replying... even for sales help. So I paid the $40 and get nowhere. Been working on all of this for days. Did get my new ssd into macbook pro 2011 with new ram and WOW FUN! I would do that to the 2008 but still need to clone everything. Seriously doubt MS will supply updates to Windows 7!
