Ideal Zeroid Robot Light bulb replacement

Hello,

I’ve got a vintage 1977 Ideal Toys Zeroid robot. Star Team variant.

It looks brand new inside and out. Problem is with new batteries it does not light up. I am thinking maybe the bulb is damaged or burned out.

Does anyone know if that bulb can be replaced? Has anyone done this? The upper body where the bulb is seems quite sealed.

Any help appreciated!

Does it do anything at all?

da

No it doesn't :(

I tried to run leads right to the light bulb too. No dice.

if you remove the screws. (second pic).. does it come out?

you might need to try to wriggle

i believe it is a 3V Flashlight bulb which you can consider changing to LED type.

The one screw is just to fasten the conductor latch in place. I have removed it and nothing else comes loose. There is a squarish notch next to the bulb hole so this might be some clue. Although I am at a loss.

There’s nothing to “wriggle” really. I can’t grab the bulb enough to do anything. It does look screwed in, though.

Hi @dargie ,

To my view, in the second picture it seems as though the connector which is riveted in place is connected to a piece which extends under the plastic to make contact with the outer screw section of the bulb and the connector that is held in with the screw is pushed down to make contact with the centre conductor of the bulb.

When the device is closed then both connectors are in contact with the power but only one needs to be is pushed down far enough to make contact as the other is already in contact.

Perhaps you need to drill out the rivet to release the "hold" that the connector has on the bulb or maybe that's what the bulb "screws" into and you have to come in from the top.

The grey plastic section above the bulb may be 'reversed thread" onto the clear plastic. Have you tried unscrewing it in the opposite direction to the normal way of unscrewing things?

Can you test with an Ohmmeter across the bulb or even the two connectors, the screwed in one pushed down to make contact with the bulb, to check if there is continuity through the bulb?

Also just for interest, if you have an Ohmmeter, check for continuity between the two rivet heads on view in the 2nd picture - the one on the connector and the one slightly to its right as viewed in the picture.

Just my 2 cents ;-)

So I was going to go all out and make some amazing additions with arduino but I was reluctant to drill into this vintage beauty. I wanted a solution that was not destructive in any way and could be reversed if wanted.

I found a $3 clip on bicycle light and took the guts out.

This gave me a circuit board, and two LEDs powered by 2 watch batteries.

I attached that to the underside with a small piece of double sided tape.

I extended one light up through the rivet hole in the bottom with some additional wire. Also I replaced that LED with a blue one for obvious reasons. I left the bottom white LED in the position it came in for a ground FX look.

The tube is wrapped in electrical tape at its base to wedged it in where the AA batteries were stored.

Now with one press on the bottom button it turns on with a steady blue, second press is a fast flash, third press is a slower flash and the fourth press turns it off.

This has been a great fix for me and I hope it can be helpful to others out there.

Let me know if there are any other questions about this process.

Best,

-J

All roads lead to 0 light activity ;(

I did end up popping the top off. It was gut wrenching and careful work. Eventually with an exacto and scalpel I was able to find gaps and get the blade edge in. All of a sudden it popped off! Completely intact thankfully.

Getting the bulb out was difficult but I did it and got a replacement. Still not lighting up. I’m not sure why but at this point I am going the arduino route and replace the light altogether with an LED that changes colors and flashes. Will post pics once complete!

Thank you all for the answers provided!

The new LED bulb assembly I purchased at a chain called DIY Homecenter:

https://diyhomecenter.net/

Or you can look on Amazon for them:

Good luck!

Thank you. I tried Amazon link but it comes up with a bike helmet light…

Ty tho

That is what it was to start with. You have to remove the lights/circuit board and extend the wires :)
