iPhone, itunes, mac mini save and retrieve iPhone info

OK, this is about compatibility.

I have a 2009 mac mini running 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) have a backed up copy of my old iPhone4 on it in iTunes 11.4 (18).

I just got a new iPhone 7, this is not compatible with the iTunes on my old mini.

Lost my old iPhone 4 but, like I said, I thought I was safe because of the backup I had just done. This old mini can only accommodate OS-X El Capitan.

Question: If I do the system upgrade will it be enough to restore my old iPhone 4 info onto my new iPhone 7?

Can this even work?

Update (10/14/2020)

yes, it can. as long as the old info has been saved off. install el cap and then plug in your new phone.

I would leave your mac mini alone here.

Instead connect a second Mac system to your mini in Target Disk Mode to copy off your iTunes library to a newer MacOS system. The problem you face here is finding the correct iTunes which supports your iPhone 7 that will run on El Capitan. I would rather work off a second system with a copy Vs running the risk of loosing everything.

I don’t see why not. Especially due to the fact that many Apple/Mac technicians (including myself) now use El Capitan as the preferred operating system to install on problematic macs after resolving hard drive failures. It’s just a more recent OS and widely compatible even with older systems.

Regardless, your iPhone 4 backup isn’t going anywhere if you upgrade to El Capitan. It’s treated like a regular data file.

After the upgrade to El Cap, you should be able to restore from backup and your iPhone 7 will be all set. The only issues you might have is that any older apps from your iPhone 4 might not exist anymore or the developers no longer update them, meaning your iPhone 7 cannot support them.

If you’re unfamiliar with restoring using iTunes, reference the Apple article under “Transfer your iTunes backup to your new device”
