HP 15 series laptop wont turn on

Thanks for your attention.

HP 15-ay052nr laptop will not turn on. I have two adapters and a new battery. When plugged in the white lite displays meaning the batter is charged. However when pressing power button no lights, beeps or fan sounds occur. I have tried hard reset, static release, BIOS reset and reloading the memory stick. Only sign of life is the white light near the plug. I left everything unplugged for 10 hours and still nothing.

I'm thinking its the motherboard or the power button. Should i just buy a new laptop ? Any other tips are appreciated.

Hi @islander87 ,

Some things to try:

a) Remove the battery from the laptop and try starting the laptop with the adapter connected and switched on.

If it starts allow it to boot all the way to the Windows desktop, let the HDD activity settle a bit and then shutdown the laptop in the normal manner.

Once it has completely shutdown, switch off and disconnect the adapter from the laptop, re-insert the battery into the laptop, reconnect and switch on the adapter and try to start the laptop.

If it starts allow it to boot all the way to the Windows desktop, let the HDD activity settle a bit and then check the charge status of the battery. If it is charging allow it to fully charge before switching off the adapter and disconnecting it from the laptop.

b) If this is how you reset the BIOS apologies ;-)

Try removing the RTC battery from the laptop for a minute or so and then re-insert the RTC battery. Note its’ orientation before you remove it so that you re-insert it the correct way. You may want to measure the voltage of the battery when you have it out to ensure that it is OK.

Reassemble the laptop and try to start it.

Here’s a link to the service manual for your model laptop.

Scroll to p.63 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove/replace the RTC battery.

c) Check the Power button for continuity.

Scroll to p.85 in the service manual to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the Power button board. You should only do enough of the procedure to gain access the the Power button board cable connector on the motherboard so that you can unplug it from the board and then use an Ohmmeter to test the button for continuity when it is being operated.

If the button is faulty the part number is at the top of p.85.

If you search online using the part number only in the search box of your browser, you’ll get results for suppliers of the part.

Before putting battery back, with power supply disconnected from laptop, hold the power button down for 5 seconds to discharge any power left in system Then try connecting power supply and pressing power button, etc.
