My Core 2 Duo MacBook will turn on, but not display anything.

Hello,

My brother gave me his old 2.13GHz White Core 2 Duo MacBook.

It was stored in the garage for years. When I turn on the system, it will make 2 quiet boops, turn off, turn on again, then make 2 more quiet boops, before reading the install DVD. The display is not working. I can hear the fans, so I know the system isn’t completely dead.

Will I need to replace the inverter cable, or could it be another issue all together? Thanks for your time.

I can provide more details, such as serial number, etc.

I looked at my logic board and it is a 820-2496-A logic board. I also cannot see a pram battery to replace. I can post photos if needed. What should I do now? Thanks for your time.

@grhmhome - I guess you have a Santa Rosa system not the standard one. Check @mayer update.

I will check it out. Thanks for helping me out @danj @mayer

Looks like my macbook doesn’t have a pram battery. I got this mac as a refurb back in 2011 before giving it to my brother then he gave it back recently. I wonder if the person who originally refurbed it swapped some of the parts? Thanks for your help. I’m going to abandon the project.

I checked the ram and it has the stock ram that was included with the system. Could it be bad ram? The ram doesn't look corroded.

I'd reseat it, just to make sure. After you have the new PRAM battery we can look at it again.

I didn't find the pram battery in stock on ifixit, but I found the same part on ebay, so I'll replace the pram when I get the part in the mail.

da

I have the part. I'm in the process of removing the screws and replacing the battery. I'll update once the new pram battery is installed.

I discovered when opening the macbook that the logic board (820-2496-A) doesn’t have a pram battery. What should I do now? I can post pictures and provide more details. Thanks for your time.

As you had it in storage for a long time I’m sure the PRAM battery is dead. I would start off replacing it MacBook Core 2 Duo PRAM Battery Replacement. I’m assuming you have the battery under charge and the battery tester is showing the battery is still good.

Keep in mind this system can only support upto El Capitan OS-X 10.11.x which does limit its usefulness. El Capitan security updates will likely end some time in 2019.

Carefully review the spec link above to make sure you want to spend the time & money to keep this system going.

Thanks for the reply.

The battery isn't charged yet, but the battery is flashing at 1/5. I could replace the pram battery. Could that be the reason why it wont display, or could there be multiple problems besides the display? Could the display problem be due to the battery not being charged? I tried powering the system without a battery plugged in, while the power cable was connected and it does the same thing.

The PRAM battery holds the settings info and without a good working battery you can encounter issues like you are facing. Finish charging your main battery to see what happens then.

If the battery won't charge (or hold the charge) you'll need a new battery as well

da

Alright. That is exactly what I'll do. Once it is done charging, I'll report back. If I need to replace the pram battery, then I might as well do that.

Looks like the battery is fine. It is fully charged. I still have the same issues as mentioned before. Would I only need to replace the pram battery or would there be anything else that would need replaced? Also, I remember years ago, my dad put a magnet near the display and it made it display in negative colors. Would replacing the inverter possibly fix that or would I need to replace the whole screen? I would rather not want to replace a whole screen.

da

You need to start with the PRAM battery as I stated it holds the settings and will not allow the system to run in a discharged state.
