Please help me! My MacBook won’t turn on! I’m traveling in CR

Hello and thank you in advance for all advice and help.

I am currently in Costa Rica for the next three weeks. I have my laptop with me and have a few pressing writing deadlines—- I am a PhD student. My computer was working fine yesterday and when I went to turn it on today, it will not turn on. No noises are made at all and I have tried a few different suggestions (holding down keys at the same time, unplugging charger etc). The charger light is green which shows the battery is charged.

The nearest macstore is 6 hours away. I am desperate.

Any suggestions? And, if I am must wait for a repair, will everything on my computer be lost? I am an idiot and none of my files are backed up on an external hard drive.

There have been no liquid damage or spills. Today I was walking in a bit of a light rain for ten minutes but the laptop was secured in my backpack and none of my books that were also in the bag show any signs of water damage.

Your problem may be getting into the bottom . To do that you will need a P5 screw driver.

What you want to try for is a spontaneous reboot and SMC reset. You need to disconnect the battery and the mag-safe. Press and hold the power button for ten seconds. Now hook the battery back up then connect the mag-safe and it should reboot.

I’m guessing you are using a travel adapter and plugging your charger into that. It’s possible that your computer is not getting the power it needs or somewhere along the line it’s gotten to much power. I’m not sure if that’s what actually happened or not. It at all possible I would see if you can try another charging cable from someone. Preferably one that has the correct connections and does not need to go though a travel adapter it that’s the case. As for your files, they will not be lost as they are stored on either a hard drive or some sort of flash memory if you have a newer laptop. If all else fails, you should be able to retrieve the data at a later time. Without knowing how old the computer is, it’s hard to come up with any other ideas as to why it may not be working but if it’s an older laptop then components in it may have just failed. A smart ideas if to back up your files with either something like Google Drive or Dropbox. I know it’s an easy thing to overlook and I’m guilty of not backing up my data as well as I should sometimes. Hope everything works out for you in the end.

Hello! Thank you for your answer! I don’t need a charger adapter here so it is just my charger. The MagSafe light is showing green which means it is charged. But, great to hear about my files being ok. The MacBook is a 2015 and has been used for word processing and internet searching. I am wondering if maybe it got a virus?

Just checking back. I don't think a virus would cause this type of behavior. Typically, with a virus it will effect the software and not necessarily the hardware. I would try @mayer suggestion.

Sadly, No

You have a problem with the power logic within your system. Until you open the system to inspect it.

At this point I think you have no choice than to get a second system (buy or rent) so you can get what you need to get done.

Your data on your dead system is still safe! So if you can get your system fixed you’ll be OK. If your system can’t be repaired (given the location) you can take your SSD drive out and place it into a special USB case to then transfer your stuff over to another Mac system.

One of the problems when traveling is the cost and speed of the internet from where you are staying. In addition you can also have your info intercepted unless you use a VPN tunnel. Frankly, large documents, images and vids is not something you want to push to your own server resource back home. I would recommend you do get into the habit having a backup drive.
