Broke Airport Board Socket on the Logic Board (Late 2015 27" iMac)

I just took apart everything in my Late 2015 27" iMac in order to install a bigger PCIe SSD. I accidentally broke off the socket that secures the Airport Board onto the Logic Board. See pictures: https://imgur.com/a/gwVgHol . It doesn't look like the Airport Board was damaged, or any of the metal on the Logic Board, but the plastic broke off from the Logic Board and the socket. It all still fits together, so I tried putting it back together, and my Wi-Fi is not working. My iMac is not reading the WiFi part of the Airport card. Bluetooth works fine. What can I do? Does it need to be soldered back on or does the Logic Board need to be replaced? Thank you.

I can get the socket pretty tight on the Logic Board, without tape or soldering or glue or anything. The metal pins are a little bent to hold it into the Logic Board tighter. I then use polyimide tape to make sure it’s secure. The bluetooth works but the WiFi part is still not recognized by my machine:

On top of that, I also just noticed that there is a poor contact or frayed wire connected to the Airport card as well:

You’ll need to get a replacement socket part and solder it on. You’ll need to have the correct tools and have good soldering skills. Many people don’t! I just finished fixing a logic board where someone had messed it up.

Any idea why my iMac might not be recognizing my PCIe SSD either? It was recognizing it before fine, but when I tried to fix this WiFi problem it stopped recognizing it.

The socket is PCIe for the AirPort board. Its likely one of the contacts is shorting out which is messing up the PCIe bus that your blade SSD is sharing.

Once you fix the socket it should fix the blade drive issue.

It looks like the fan is working fine now, though sometimes I still get random restarts because of a problem, a panic that had to do with kernal task I think. If I take the airport card all together will it make the PCIe faster since they both use PCIe?

Sadly, replacement of the socket is whats really needed.

Removing the AirPort board might solve the shorting of the connector pins it won't solve the fan issue and the system running in safe mode (CPU's clocking is reduced). Speed of the PCI bus its self is not altered in any case.

I'm not sure if the socket can really be "replaced" since the plastic actually broke and a new one wouldn't fit on it be. What if I just took the socket off?

That why G-d created ethernet cables and ethernet ports, to bypass airport cards and give you faster access to the internet. It’s not a perfect solution but close.

Probably because you installed a PC mSata stick with an adapter instead of one actually built for Apple

The SATA one was always being recognized, and the PCIe one was also recognized, but then stopped being recognized when I tried to fix my WiFi issue. I just tried fixing the issues and it started recognizing the PCIe again, but the bluetooth stopped working now! I bought an PCIe blade SSD apple proprietary SSPOLARIS made by Samsung on eBay/Beetstech.

@jazzyjacck I am familiar with Beetstech and have been using them as a parts supplier on retina displays lately (have been very pleased). But I know nothing about these SSPOLARIS blades. I'm sure @danj and I would find this information of great interest. Could you provide links and tell us of your first hand experiences using them? Also would you please expand your profile so we can get to know you better.

Not sure if this is the exact one I got, but it's similar: https://beetstech.com/product/solid-stat...

@danj actually told me about them!

It has been working fine so far! But I haven't done anything on it, except for installing the OS onto it, because I have been trying to fix this WiFi situation.

Okay so I got my system recognizing both the SATA SSD (Samsung 860 Pro) and the PCIe SSD (Samsung SSPOLARIS) I installed and the bluetooth is working again, but I still can't get the Wi-Fi won't work! I have not been able to get the WiFi to work since the bracket broke off the board. It might be a lost cause to keep trying until I solder it or take it to somebody else to try and fix it for me, or if I get a USB WiFi adapter.

Any suggestions to hold up the screen on the chasis without putting the adhesive on? I want to be able to use it and not have to cut through the adhesive again until I know it's working 100%. Should I use painter's tape to keep the screen on until I get the WiFi fixed?

EDIT: There seems a frayed wire connecting to the Airport card as well. It looks like a poorer contact. Here is the picture: https://imgur.com/MtplyAv
