Replacement Battery not Charging/Battery Failure (Late 2013 15" MBP)

Hey Everybody,

I recently cracked my the screen on my Late 2013 15” MBP, and as such, had to shell out a lot of cash for a replacement. Since I was already going into the computer’s internals to do that, I figured I’d also replace its original “Replace Soon” battery.

I ordered the new screen, battery, as well as an extensive iFixit toolkit off of amazon, and all the parts arrived yesterday. The battery I ordered was from HUSAN, which was a bit cheaper than the one from iFixit.

Long story short, I recently finished taking my computer and putting it back together, and lo and behold—it worked—well, sort of. Thankfully, the new screen is flawless, but the battery is another story entirely; it sits at a charge of 29% and doesn’t seem to charge at all. What’s more, the computer will not turn on without the Magsafe 2 adapter in place (LED is orange), and will shut down immediately upon its removal.

Based on some feedback I’ve seen here, I went through the standard process of resetting the SMC/NVRAM (several times), running diagnostics, letting it charge, etc., but nothing short of opening it up has made any difference. Users on here informed me of the coconutBattery diagnostic tool, which produced the following details:

As you can see, my coconutBattery Plus trial gave me a precise explanation for the battery’s problems: “Open Thermistor,” which appears to be a permanent failure. I have a few questions:

  1. Is there anything else I can try to fix this issue—via software or otherwise—before tearing my machine open again? Should I let it charge overnight at least? I’m certainly dreading getting the now-glued in replacement battery out now.
  2. Is my replacement battery DoA or is there something hardware-wise I can do to fix the “Open Thermistor,” whatever that means?
  3. Does this problem signal some kind of greater hardware failure, i.e., a faulty DC-In board? This seems unlikely unless something happened while I had my machine open; I didn’t have any problems with the battery/charging prior to today, I only wished to upgrade my aging battery.

Regardless of the fix, I’m certainly not buying replacement parts from anyone but iFixit in the future! Lesson learned.

I appreciate any and all help, even if it’s just to confirm what I already know: I probably need a replacement-replacement battery, which I’ve already ordered. I’m just hoping it’s not worse than that for some reason, or if there’s a possibility that I can fix the issue with the current battery.

The Thermistor is a sensor within the battery which reacts to temperature of the battery so it doesn’t over charge. You’ll need to get a replacement battery from HUSAN or get your money back and get a better quality battery.

It’s a shame I was sold a PoS, but oh well, at least it’s not something worse. Teaches me to buy the relatively cheaper product in the future.

Thanks anyways!
