MacBook turns on after 10mn

Hi, I have an isssue with my macbook Air.

It never fell, never got anything spilled on it, it’s been taken care of with outmost care. I’ve been using it daily since 2015 and it never failed me.

  • macOS Mojave
  • Battery still running good

Now, it’s been a few months since I’ve been encountering this issue.

My macbook won’t turn on directly when I press the power button. I’ll hear the fan running but the screen remains black. Not pitch black as if the computer was completely shut down but black as in the computer is definitely getting some energy.

The weird thing is that if after I pressed the power button, I leave it, it’ll turn on finally after 8-10mn directly on the authentication screen (No loader bar). The same thing is if close the lid after using it a bit, after an hour or so (I guess when it goes on sleep) it won’t wake up. It’ll be shutdown.

What I tried :

  • Reset of the PRAM/NVRAM
  • Reset of SMC
  • Change of battery
  • Reset of the SSD and new install of OS.
  • Opened it and cleaned the fan

When it’s finally turned on, I try multiple stuff like check of permissions and check of the SSD. Tried changing the parameters of the sleep pattern.

When it’s turned on, it works perfectly and if I shut it down and restart it right after, it also work perfectly.

I’m trying to look for solutions for now as if I take it to an Apple store, I’m sure they’ll charge me a lot for replacing the logic board or some other things and it’s not under warranty anymore so I’d rather buy a new one.

Thank you :)

Most likely your battery needs replacing or the charging logic needs repair. How about checking it using this gem of an app: CoconutBattery and post a snapshot of the main window here for us to see Aggiungere immagini ad una domanda

Hi Dan

First, thank you for taking the time to answer.

I also thought it could be a battery issue because if the mac is not charged enough, It'll take more than 10mn to turn on. that's why I changed it, and when I did, it turned on right after I pressed the power button (So I thought, I'm saved but no..) a few hours later, when the lid was closed and I opened it, I still encountered the same issue. But as soon as I get home, I'll try using the app and post the snapshot.

By the way, I'm not encountering issues with the charging.

Lets still get a snapshot of CoconutBattery as it can tell us whats happening.

Here's the snapshot of CoconutBattery. By the way, I'm currently using my old battery. I figured since the new one didn't change anything I put back the old one.

Hi,

I found an answer to my issue. After checking the net on booting issues, I enabled TRIM on my macbook Air that has a SSD with APFS. After enabling it, the mac went from 10 or more minutes to boot to 3 minutes. At this point I thought it may be because of the APFS format that I’m encoutering this issue, that happened not to long after I formated my SSD with APFS and installing High Sierra. So I went back to Sierra with HFS+ and eveything is back to normal. My macbook now boot in 20s and I don’t have any issues. I also disabled autopoweroff via the terminal to avoid finding my computer down after a long period of time.

Thank you Dan for you help. I also changed the battery which seemed to cause issues during the boot if my computer is not fully charged or plugged.

You’ve exceeded what this battery can offer! You’ve pushed it beyond the 1,000 limit. For reference Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks

As I told you before, I already changed the battery and tested for a couple of days and I still encountered the same issue. I had already checked the number of cycles and knew I was way beyond the limit and so I changed it but there was no difference so I put back the old one.

Please put the new battery in as showing me the old one won't help me see whats wrong with it.
