after dropping MacBook Pro, keyboard has lag, and trackpad not working

It is a Macbook pro 13 inch - mid 2012, with 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7. 8 GB Ram (1600 MHz DDR3). I dropped it from about 4 feet onto a hard floor which resulted in a slight dent on the front right corner of the upper case. This drop caused the following problems:

  1. the keyboard has a lag most of the time, which gets worse the longer I try to use it. When I type, it takes a second, or longer for the letter to appear on the screen, and usually it gets so bad that it’s too frustrating to use if whatever I’m doing requires much typing.
  2. The trackpad no longer works at all. Mechanically speaking it feels normal, and clicks as it should, but using the track pad does not move the cursor, nor does clicking the track pad do anything if the cursor happens to be on something clickable. Using an external mouse with a bluetooth thingy in the USB port works fine.

Any guidance on what I need to do to fix this myself would be most appreciated :)

Below you can see the dent in the right front corner of the laptop. Note there is more damage to the upper case than there is to the lower case.

Below is the inside of the case on the corner that was damaged. There’s essentially no damage on the inside of the metal case, so no chance that the case is bent and pushing on another component like the battery. In this case the damaged corner is next to the hard drive anyway, and the battery is on the other side.

You can see below that the drop did break one of the battery mounts, but the battery appears to be in proper place

Below is an pic of the entire insides in case anyone sees anything out of whack:

Also, for what it's worth I ran the apple hardware diagnostic test and it said everything was fine. I did not run the extensive test, just the basic one. If running the more detailed hardware test would be helpful, just let me know and I'll do it.

Hook up an external USB keyboard and mouse to help pinpoint the problem area and so we know where to start looking. Please let us know your results.

UPDATE

The most common issue on this model is the hard drive cable. I’d like to see you pull the drive and use an SATA to USB adapter and boot externally, bypassing the cable.

Good! Let's first take a look at a possible swollen battery.

I will remove the battery as suggested by you and Dan, but I'm waiting on a that three pronged screwdriver to arrive from amazon. stay tuned.

This is definitely a tough one. It can be that the keyboard connector came loose,or ripped some. As for the trackpad,I’d itself could have internally been damaged.

Here’s the problem…it can,and likely is,a component,or components on the motherboard that may have been damaged or knocked loose.

Honestly, your trackpad ribbon cable(the wires that communicate with and power it),could have simply popped out of place.

Please reply. I could try to help you troubleshoot a bit. Worse case,a repair shop sometimes can help. But it depends. The lag issue sounds to me like one or more components were damaged.

Depending on how bent the right corner is it could be pressing on the battery which is then pressing on the trackpad and its ribbon cables.

I would take the battery out to see if that helps Installazione della batteria nel MacBook Pro Unibody da 13", versione metà 2010

the damaged corner is the one where the hard drive is located in this case. but I will remove the battery and check it out nonetheless
