Half retina screen flickering when moving the mouse, blacks out

As the description says, my problem is that half the screen blacks out entirely and the other half flickers when you move the mouse. If you stop using the mouse, the entire screen blacks out. Everything seems to be working normal in the OS in the background. Any one seen this problem before? Might be the graphics card maybe? I has happened 3 times the last 24 hours.

I put a video here:

Your display assembly is damaged! I’ve seen this a few times.

I’m suspecting someone took off the display incorrectly and damaged the unit in the process. Sadly this will require a new unit:

  • [prodotto collegato mancante o disabilitato: IF174-036]
  • [prodotto collegato mancante o disabilitato: IF174-037]

You’ll also need this kit: [prodotto collegato mancante o disabilitato: IF174-005] and you’ll likely need a few of these Plastic Cards

Here’s the IFIXIT guide to properly take the display off and to apply the adhesive strips on the new one Sostituzione Schermo Retina 5K iMac Intel 27"

I suspect you are correct about the root of the problem, BUT it has not been opened before. Could it be that a problem with the display "just happens"?

Basically the display controller board located on the top edge of the display got damaged. Take a look at Steps 5 & 6 in the Smontaggio iMac Intel Retina 5K 27".

What I've seen is people use too long a tool which hits the ribbon cables damaging them. Here you might just have a bad display assembly. If thats the case (never opened) you should try getting it fixed under warranty.

Yeah , I thought so too @danj, but its older than 1 year, so I guess it will cost me. Might be cheaper to buy a new display.

I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water yet! Go to an Apple Store or authorized service center.

I think you still have a good chance getting it done under a 'warranty exception' but you need to press for it! Be polite but firm! You may need to work up the food chain, talk to the service manager and then the store and then the regional manager.

I do not have a Mac.

but yes it can be the graphics card. It could be an os corruption. When you power it on,is the screen black?

To determine if I a Mac has a actual display problem or the GPU is defective, I hit cmd-shift-3 to make a screenshot while the flickering etc. is happening. If You see the errors on the screenshots, the GPU actually rendered the picture wrong and it's a high chance it's defective. If the screenshot is clear it looks like the GPU renders correctly, but the screen doesn't display it correctly.
