Vizio E701i-A3E backlights only working.

I have a Vizio E701i-A3E Everything was working fine and one day the video just went out but sound was working. After I turned it off and back on the sound no longer worked. I changed the Main board and the T=-con board, still nothing but the backlights come on. Doubled checked all the connections to make sure they were seated. Any help on this would be appreceiated.

Hi @b23norris ,

Sounds like there may be a problem with the power board.

You've changed the mainboard and the T-Con have you checked the voltages on the Power board?

Just because the backlights work doesn't mean that "all" the power is being supplied to where it is needed.

@jayeff I did test the power board and was not putting out the correct voltage. I ordered a new power board all voltages check out correctly now. However the back lights do come on but there is still no image on the screen.

Hi @b23norris ,

Just to confuse you a bit more ;-)

Was the incorrect voltage output from the faulty Power board higher or lower than specified?

If the voltage was higher, I'm wondering if it was sufficiently high enough to have damaged whatever board it fed both the original board and then the subsequent replacement board as well before you replaced the power board

Now that you have corrected the power board problem you may have to try another replacement board (which ever one may have been affected, TCON or mainboard) to see if the TV now works OK or not.

If it was lower most probably it wouldn't have caused any problems to the other boards.

Just a thought.

@jayeff The stand by power was only about 1.5V, just as well as the rest were about 1/2 the value they should have been.

@b23norris

double check all your wiring. The problem we are running into is that you already replaced all the boards (power, main and T-con) so you really have nothing left to change. Check the wiring and check the LCD driver boards. That is where the wires from the t-con board enter the panel. See if you can identify any issues with that. Of course you did make sure that you have the right boards and that those are new/guaranteed to work.

@oldturkey03 Ok Just doubled checked all the wires. All are plugged in fully and there are no tears or anything in them. Never had to check the LCD driver board on any tv yet. What does this involve and how would I check it?

da

@b23norris those boards are the ones the t-con board connects to. There are usually two and and they are connected via very thin ribbon cables to the LCD panel. Those are very difficult to work on since schematics etc. are almost non-existent.

da

@oldturkey03 So they are in the panel of the tv. I done a quick search for the board couldn't find anything, can they be replaced?

da

No since the ribbon cables are bonded to the panel. Take a look around the top or side of your LCD panel. You should find the fine ribbon cables and follow those to the boards where they originate from. Those are usually the driver boards.

This is such an odd failure on your TV but Vizio uses a hodgepodge of parts and do not support DIY'ers at all. It's one brand that is hard to really get a handle on. Under any other circumstance I would have said it's your main board or the T-con board (E701i-A3 has known issues with that)....obviously not in this case.

Hi @Online Gaming Networking,

Search online for either (insert TV make and full model number) power board or the more safe option of disconnecting the power from the TV, removing the back cover and then locating the power board’s board number including any Revision number that is usually printed on the power board itself and search for (insert full board number details) to find suppliers of the board that suit you.

Sometimes the power board may have a barcode sticker on it which may also have the board number on it which should nearly match (identical?) the number printed on the board itself so that you can check. If it is slightly different (higher rev. number perhaps) go with the barcode number as sometimes the same power board can be used by several manufacturers and it may be slightly altered to suit the particular requirements of the TV make and model.

If you can’t find a specific board then search for (insert board details) compatible board and try that
