How can I reinstall osx on my iMac?

I’m guessing Dan the man will be first to answer this, since he has with my other questions.. So, here we go Dan! (or someone faster than Dan)

I am unsure if the imac i have is the one i picked for the question, but i think it’s a 27” late 2009.

A few days ago, I decided to put in a Samsung 50gb EVO 860 ssd into my imac. I managed to get the old one out, and the new ssd in, but I got caught in a jam where it required a password, and Dan helped me get to the point where I was able to reset it and reach recovery mode.

Since then I am stuck without any OS on my new ssd,… Since i was using mojave on my new (mid 2012 macbook pro), I wasn’t able to make a bootable usb for the 2009 iMac. I have downloaded a few different OS’s online (mountain lion, el capitan, sierra) but when i get to the point it starts to load, it gives me an error message saying the download was damaged or missing elements or something. I called apple - they told me i would be able to do a usb install with high sierra if i had a computer with that available.

So, I restored 10.13.3 from my time machine, and followed this guide- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64IOWM8e...

I only get the no smoking symbol (without the cigarette, just a circle with a line through), and when I tried to install high sierra onto the ssd from recovery mode on my macbook, i only get a folder with a question mark flashing. I have tried numerous ways - formatting the ssd in GUID, and master boot record.. I didn’t try APFS since Dan has told me that won’t work with the SSD..

i’m grateful for any help with this thing.. it’s close to becoming the next target at the range!

Where are you getting these installers and how are you creating the bootable media for your Mac?

Could you also confirm that this is your model iMac too?

Yeah, I goofed on the part where I assumed that the “do not enter” sign meant that HS wouldn’t work with your Mac. The maximum OS for your Mac is indeed HS.

Let’s try creating a bootable USB for your Mac one more time… with the correct/genuine installers. Try using the createinstallmedia guide I have linked to below for creating those bootable USBs.

Try installing macOS on an external drive and then try booting form that drive. I want to rule out or decide a drive problem because I have a hunch that either your hard drive or your hard drive cable is going bad.

I think you said nevermind because it is possible to have high sierra on an 09 iMac, but I'm not really sure if it is or not. when i called into apple a few weeks ago to troubleshoot something when i first bought it ( high sierra was installed on it when i purchased it) the apple associate who was helping me asked me what it the OS was, and she said "whoa, how did you get that on there?" i told her i purchased it the day before on craigslist and she said "well we aren't going to be able to help you with that machine because of it's setup' - or something along those lines... but when i called in 2 days ago, trying to troubleshoot it again, the apple associate told me that i could get high sierra on it, but because i had mojave on my macbook pro, i would lose what is on this drive because I would have to install high sierra and do the usb drive after it is loaded... so i'm not sure whether it can or can't..

Three of the OS's I downloaded from sites i found on google searches, and those ones gave me the error on the imac when installing. however, i did what the apple associate said, and reinstalled high sierra on this macbook pro from the time machine that i have had for years now, and followed the guide in the video i posted at the bottom of my original question here..

I do believe that is the model i have, but I do have 8GB memory in there. he sold it to me with 4gb, but i had 2 extra 4gb RAM that matched up perfect for it.. If i could get it working like the MBP i'm typing on right now, this part of the question would be answered much easier!

Well, after a few attempts I still don't have an OS on the imac.. I used a legitimate copy of high sierra, and followed the instructions, and for some reason it gave me the prohibitory sign when it was finished.. so then i thought i would try to install a copy of lion on there. but i don't have a copy of lion on my macbook or on my time capsule, so i thought i would use a torrent file. it appeared it was working, but then when it rebooted, it gets stuck on ' Installing.... '

I can't download anything older than high sierra from apple, and i'm confused why it didn't work.. but the only other thing i can think of doing is somehow making it a windows computer, and using virtual box or something.. i don't know. computers are kicking my ass these days.. i thought i was pretty good with them. times have changed, and the TBI that I will be recovering from forever doesn't give me any help.
