iPod freezes iTunes and "computer" won't go to disk mode and more.

It wasn't dropped recently or knowingly mistreated. Every time we plug it into ANY computer (we've tried 3), using any USB (we've tried 2) cord it freezes iTunes and doesn't even show up on iTunes. If I try to look at it using "computer" (using Windows Vista or Windows 7) it freezes that too. We tried running the diagnostic test. It won't go past detecting "FW". Which I don't understand. I tried looking FW up and it looks like something this iPod doesn't even use. I have looked at all 13 of the support pages, clicking the titles that looked helpful and one suggested reformatting by placing the iPod into disk mode, then going into iTunes. I can't even get the iPod into disk mode! It doesn't respond at all.

It is supposedly empty: no music, videos, podcasts, photos or contacts but it claims that 48.5 GB are being used with only 25.7 GB free (it is an 80GB) and all 48.5 GB in use fall into the "other" category. It says it has three games, but none launch.

Ummmm.... I think that is everything. As you can undoubtedly tell, I am no technological genius. Just a Mommy who has been able to follow clear (read: 'idiot-proof') instructions in the past to fix computer issues. I'd love to be the hero and fix my teenager's favourite "toy". It has been like this a few weeks now and she really misses it. I am NOT replacing it.

Any and all help will be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you

I completely destroyed it.

I was being so careful too.

I somehow managed to break the connector that holds the battery cable completely off the logic board. I tried placing Dad's logic board in (as well as his hard drive), but all that did was switch the bad guts of his iPod to a new case. I was hoping that maybe a cable was his problem because I kept hers in. The good news is that I got the iPod disassembled and reassembled with a minimum of mangling. (If you can ignore the whole connector fiasco, of course)

The better news is that Hubby bought her a brand new one last night. She is graduating high school in less than a month so it is her graduation gift.

Despite the sad outcome for the original iPod, I would like you to know that I really appreciate all the advice and encouragement you gave me. I don't know if I would have even attempted it if a real person hadn't been egging me on. Plus, if I hadn't totally demo-ed her iPod (I called him almost in tears), Hubby probably wouldn't have replaced it!

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Good for your daughter :-) Anyhow, you are not the first person that this happens to. It is the most common thing that happens. Let us know if you are going to restore the broken one so you can sell it on ebay. They actually do sell for good money....:-) all the best to you and your family :-)

If I do fiddle with the other one, it will just be to see if I CAN do anything about it. THAT one is giving me error codes that I haven't looked up much yet. Things around the house have been neglected these past couple of weeks, so it won't be anytime soon. I wouldn't be trying to sell it. And I don't want it for myself. I love my little 4th generation nano. I'll hang onto the classics though for the batteries if nothing else.

Thanks again for all of your encouragement! Even though I ended up completely wrecking the iPod, I'm feeling pretty good about what I did right.

bayleigh70, it does sound to me like you have a HDD issue. I believe that you are due for a new one. You can double check it if you have a USB to Zif adapter and test the HDD as a separate drive. I believe that it will resolve your troubles if you replace that drive. FW does refer to Firewire and the Ipod classic is set up for charging through firewire. So in your menu, it will hang up on FW since it can not find a firewire connection. That is normal on the diagnostic menu. Let us know how it is going. Good Luck.

I also have an ipod that is doing something similer. I have replaced the hard drive, hdd ribbon, battery and logic board. I replaced the logic board twice because I thought I got a bad one the first time. The new logic board didn't help it dose the same thing other then i can get mine in disk mode. after I put it in disk mode and plug it in it freezes itunes and won't show up. I did have it show up once the very first time I pluged it in. When I tried to restore it came back with a unknown error 1437. After that is when it started freezing itunes. Help me please.

Thank you

I replaced the new harddrive with one out of mf my working ipod and it works so it must have been the harddrive

nathan error 1437 is a hardware/firmware error when the iPod is not being recognized as such. A lot of times this can be resolved by installing different firmware. You could google 'download ipod firmware'

Click the site by FelixBruns and download the firmware you need and restore your ipod with that ipsw. But of course, a new drive can fix it too...:-)

I am going to have to look up what "USB to Zif" means!

Thank you for replying.

I don't want to spend any money on it unless I know that is going to fix the problem. Even then, it is still quite a bit of cash for the part. Not sure I want to spend that much... It is definitely something to think about.

bayleigh70, just checked ebay and the going price is around $5.00 What this allows you to do is to check your HDD as a drive separate from the iPod logic board. It is just a way to see if you can access your HDD. It is not going to fix it, only to verify it. A drive for your iPod is about $60, so a lot cheaper than any similar MP3 player with the same capacity. Give it a try and let us know. Good Luck.

Hmm.... thank you! You have definitely given me more to think about. I have a friend who keeps telling me to "take it in" to her repair guy. I wonder if he could check it for me and verify that it is the hard drive. $60-ish, my daughter could handle. (Actually, I am pretty sure that she could handle up to one hundred if necessary) Do you think replacing the hard drive on an iPod is at about the same scale of difficulty as replacing the hard drive on a desktop computer? I've done that twice. She absolutely adores her iPod and misses it very much. Songs on her phone are just not the same thing!

Thanks for all the advice. I really appreciate it.

I just had a thought!!!!!

We have another "dead" iPod just like this one in this house! Hubby doesn't take very good care of his toys, it would seem and dropped his one too many times. He just ended up replacing his with a cute (dumb looking) teeny-tiny nano. Once I locate this iPod, I wonder if the hard drive in THAT one is okay. I'll have to look into that a little because his could be broken even worse that our daughter's is. But that would be perfect if he damaged something else and the hard drive can replace hers.

I am very excited about this new possible development. I wish he wasn't at work so he could tell me where it is!

that would be a great idea, at least give it a try. I would hate for you to give up so soon. If you still have issues after you try the other HDD and let me know. I do have a spare USB-to_Zif adapter I can send to you if you need it. At least that way you can figure out if it is the drive. Let us know how it is going.....GOOD LUCK

It would freeze every computer it connected to. I updated my original post to reflect that the iPod is now completely deceased. But I will keep this in mind if a future problem should develop as there are four people in this house, all with iPods.
