Keyboard frequently locks up

The keyboard on my MacBook Pro will lock up, and become unresponsive when typing.

This issue happens frequently, and does not seem to be caused by a specific key. The keyboard will accept no input (cannot type or toggle caps lock etc) until I hold down the power button and hard reboot, or sometimes the issue can be resolved by closing the laptop lid and reopening it (this does not always work though). I would like to note that the trackpad continues to work fine and the OS remains responsive when the issue is present.

I tried resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM to no success. I also wiped the disk and reinstalled MacOS, and the issue happened again in the setup process.

To me, it seems like a software or firmware issue since a restart or closing the lid and reopening can fix it. But considering the steps I took to rule out software, I’m inclined to think it must be hardware related… despite a reboot fixing it (this fact bothers me).

I haven’t spilled any liquids and there doesn’t seem to be any obstructions in the keyboard (it happens on random keys). There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when this occurs, I can have long typing/coding sessions with no issues and then I can have the issue occur multiple times within minutes.

What would be my next step for diagnosing/fixing this issue? I’m not under any warranty, so Apple is out of the question.

I am thinking maybe I should open the MacBook and check the connector for the keyboard, and perhaps give it a clean.

Any suggestions/help is appreciated. Thank you. :)

Did you have a liquid spill at one point into the keyboard or trackpad?

You may want to look at your batteries health a common issue is a swelling battery presses on the keyboard cable. Lets look at that first install this gem of an app CoconutBattery post a snapshot of the main window so we can see how your battery is doing Aggiungere immagini ad una domanda.

If you have the needed tools take the bottom cover off and see if the battery is bulging.

No, I have never spilt any liquids on the laptop. I have added a screenshot from CoconutBattery, all looks good to me.

I think my next course of action is to obtain the tools to open it up and and clean the keyboard connector.

Here's the IFIXIT guide you'll need to reference to get to the connector Sostituzione scheda madre MacBook Pro Retina 13" inizio 2015Follow Steps 1 thru 6, then jump down to Step 27 & 28

Well, I got to the connector and popped it off. There seemed to be quite a bit of crumbs and other debris around the connector so I disconnected it, cleaned it up and put everything back together.

Tested the laptop out, no issues for about 20 minutes of use and then the keyboard suddenly locked up again. I just closed the lid of the laptop and opened it back up and it fixed the issue.

I can't figure this out for the life of me, even if the keyboard was failing how does closing and opening the lid, or even a reboot fix it...

I'm so lost, I'm on the verge of never buying another Macbook as this has been an unpleasant experience to say the least.
