Why is my laptop not turning on but the indicator lights flash?

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D, that I’ve owned for almost six years now. The machine works great, and it’s my main workhorse. Earlier this year, it started experiencing trouble booting up.

When I press the power button, the indicator lights for power, battery, and charge are a steady green, however the hard drive light doesn’t even blink. Also the NUM-lock button and the CAPS-lock button flash, but don’t stay on. I can hear the fan spinning, and the drive as well, but the display doesn’t turn on.

I for sure know that it’s not a display issue, because I’ve tried using an external monitor, and that didn’t help. Also on boot, there is a distinct high speed fan and drive spinning sound that doesn’t happen when this issue occurs. The fan and drive appear to be on, but they spin at a much lower speed, so all they emit is a very low tone noise, enough to indicate they’re on.

Usually it will work after a few times of turning it off and on again, or if I press the F2 button repeatedly when booting up. Now, neither of these methods seem to work. I’ve tried powering it up with just the battery, or with the charger only and no battery, and still no dice.

I’ve tried re-seating the RAM sticks, switching their positions, cleaning them out, still no boot. I’ve even removed the drive to see if that was the issue, even plugging the drive into a different machine (which reads the drive with no problem), and again nothing seems to work.

Its been about a week since the last successful boot, and I have clientele work that I need to wrap up on there. Anyways, not sure what else to do, I’ve seen on here about the SHIFT+F8 combination on boot, I’ll try that, and perhaps other methods, but anything anyone can help with is greatly appreciated.

Update (10/29/2018)

I’ve tried the SHIFT+F8 combination on power up, and that didn’t work either.

Hi @deadmau5 ,

Have you checked that the CMOS battery is OK and not depleted?

Try doing a power reset after you remove the CMOS battery, i.e. remove main battery, remove CMOS battery, press Power button for 10+ seconds and release, insert CMOS battery, insert main battery.

Then start the laptop and if it starts check if you can get into BIOS at least.

Here's a video that hopefully may be of some help (not sure if it is exactly for your model)

Short answer: The motherboard is bad. I find that common on the L505D, unfortunately.

Long answer: From what I’ve seen with these, the Toshiba L505D is affected by the good old lead-free solder failure issue that Xbox 360s and many computers have. I’ve saved at least one, if not two or more L505Ds following this reflow procedure with great results. But I’d only pursue this if you or someone you know has good experience with soldering. It’s important to note that a preheater, in my experience, helps the results to last much more than otherwise. If you don’t have one, I wouldn’t bother.

Regardless, it is an older laptop, so I’d look into replacing it. If you’re looking for something inexpensive, there are many great refurbished laptops out there that can be had for less than a brand new one, and as far as data transfer goes, all you need is a SATA-to-USB adapter to plug your L505D’s HDD into your replacement laptop. It’s easy to get to the HDD on the L505D.

Regardless of which method you choose, good luck!

I think you did almost everything, you can try to unplug screen, keyboard, mouse, battery, HDD… from your motherboard and just keep one ram and the cpu, use an external monitor and try to boot.

Clean the motherboard if possible.

Good luck :).
