iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2889 HD Replacement - SSD not found

Bought the iFixit kit, which included 1TB Samsung 860 Evo SSD.

Followed Mike’s Clone an Existing Drive guide, only issue was that "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" wasn’t found when I tested on USB. Re-cloned as APFS, and all fine there, booted perfectly.

Jeff’s guide is great - all went well - toughest bit is getting the adhesive strips on properly. Now the issue - won’t boot with the SSD in the internal HD bay, screen shows only a folder icon with “?” in the middle, and just sits there. Replaced original HD, and booted fine. Also booted again from the SSD when on USB.

Currently have iMac with original drive, screen held on with tape until this is solved.

Any ideas please?

Did you alter the systems preferences setting Startup Disk so the SSD is set as the boot drive?

No. Should I:

1 attach SSD to USB

2 Reboot from SSD

3 take out old HD and replace with SSD ?

If that's all, my mistake (but didn't notice that mentioned in the guide...)

If you had done a proper OS install, the installer doe this. I should point out many of the cloning apps won't properly setup the partitions so you may end up still not getting things to work out cleanly.

So for now yes, boot up under your SSD externally (using the Option key to get to the Startup Disk manager), alter the setting in the prefs and you should be able to then restart the system once again and the SSD should now be the startup disk automatically. If it is then all you need to do is swap the drives around.

Thanks Dan. Issue solved by using System Preferences, Startup Disk to change to new HD - don’t know why I didn’t think of that. FYI, used SuperDuper!, and rest went fine. Only issue was changing new boot disk. All good now.
