Certain keys stop working together. Then begin to work again.

I’ve had this problem for approximately a year now. Certain keys on the keyboard stop working.

The backspace key, F1, 1, Q, F11, F12

All these keys stop working together. Never by themselves. Sometimes the fault lasts for a minute. Then spontaneously resolves. Sometimes for hours - so I’ve resorted to using a plug-in USB keyboard for the past year instead.


I was wondering if this was a common problem? Any advise is greatly appreciated

This sounds like a keyboard short, most commonly caused by a spill.

If this appears to difficult, you can always just replace the upper case.

With the first method, rather than the difficulty, I'm worried that if I make a mistake I could end up permanently messing up the laptop in some way.

I'd be more tempted to try out the second option.

I know this site encourages people to fix things instead of going to the store. I was just wondering if you knew what kind of price the apple store may quote for such a procedure?

DO NOT go to an Apple Store, they will either stick it to you or tell you you need a new machine. Do a Google search for Mac Repair and your town. Find a high rated independent repairman. Your business will be much more appreciated, you'll get it back in half the time and a lower cost.
