Why is the time between startup sound and Apple logo 1-2 hours?

After I had the iMac unplugged from power for about a week, its startup time changed from about one minute to 1-2 hours. Start system is a Samsung SSD via USB (worked fine for many months).

I have reset PRAM and VRAM, started with the SSD as the only connected device, built a new start system 10.13.6 on another SSD, but never got a startup time shorter than 75 minutes.

Once the Apple shows up, everything progresses normally, and the iMac is usable after another 40-80 seconds.

Thank you for any suggestion, I’m totally out of my depth for this one.

What do you have internally for storage? Discreet HD or SSD, or do you have a Fusion Drive?

Did you try running the onboard diagnostics pressing the D key when your system is booted up from a USB keyboard.

da

The internal storage is a 1 TB HDD, with only data on it, no start system.

And I now did the D-key check. It returns the code: VFD003.

Is this SSD boot drive internal or external? Is it original equipment?

da

The external boot drive that worked for months without problem is a Samsung Portable SSD T3 500GB, but I also tried a Crucial SSD and a normal USB-HD, always with similar very long boot times.

da

Whats the status of the internal drive (what came in the system)? What happens when you boot under it?

We maybe chasing the wrong problem!

We need to get back to the internal drive and pull all of the devices off (the simplest config)

- Do you have your system plugged into a surge suppressor or UPS?

- Have you had any lighting storms or power disruptions from the time you noted this failure?

Install this app on your boot drive: TG Pro so we can remove one possible issue.

Try booting from an external drive running EL Capitan and disconnect your other externals devices for now. We are experiencing multiple issues with third party drives and High Sierra and Mojave. Also with MicroSoft Office 2011.

I’m sorry I missed the diagnostic error code you posted VFD003 which is a display sensor error. What is happening is your system is in Safe Mode to protect it from overheating.

Reference: Apple Diagnostics: Reference codes

So at this point I think you’ll need to bring in your system to get the display replaced.
