Should I replace the Magsafe Adapter?

About a year ago a friend dropped my Macbook on its upper left corner, denting it. Since then, the charging has been quite erratic, and it's getting worse.

Often, I connect the 85w adapter ten or twelve times to start the computer charging. Sometimes the LED turns green, sometimes not, and the battery doesn't charge either way.

Until recently, an orange LED meant success: the computer was charging. Now, it's no guarantee, and sometimes it will charge with no LED at all.

Sometimes (not always) the connection between the charger and magsafe gets quite hot.

I have tried to clean the Magsafe from the outside, which may have improved it a little.

I am looking for a solution that doesn't involve a new computer as the budget is quite tight right now. I have the impression that changing a magsafe is a difficult job.

Hello Mayer and Remacberlin,

I ordered the part, and when I was forced into action by the machine refusing to take a charge any more, I replaced the i/o board with a friend's help (he claims I was essential, I'm not so sure!) It was a lot of fun to go "under the hood" and it worked.

So thanks again for your help! Cheers.

Replacing the left I/O board seems to be the reasonable course of action at this point. Here's how to do it: MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo Model A1150 Left I/O Board Replacement

Here's the part to do it: MacBook Pro 15" (Model A1150) Left I/O Board

If you feel confident stripping and reassembling your laptop, take it apart, try to undent the bottom case and maybe change the left IO board. At a last resort you can change the power adapter as well, but judging from your story i think the problem is a bad fit of the connector and you'll have to tackle the problem from its source.

it's very encouraging that two people think it's the same issue! I feel anything but confident about reassembling, but I will try to find a tech-astute friend as backup.
