Screen Blacked OUT! Adapting it to a monitor does not help. OS's OK.

Hi guys,

I have a MacBook Pro 15” Mid 2012.

From about 6 months ago, it blacked out now and then. now it went totally black.

I tried adapting it to a monitor, still no good. the the system is working normally. I can hear the sound when the system is on (bootcamp windows 10). The keyboard backlight is working too.

So, can someone please help analyzing what part is broken, the GPU chip or the cable connect the board and screen?

Thanks so much in advance!

David

Are you able to see a faint image of your desktop icons if you shine a flashlight through the Apple logo on the back of the display? If you do you have a backlight issue not a GPU issue.

Hi, Dan. thanks for your suggestion. I just did, bad news, I see $@$*...so I guess at least it was not the backlight issue.

If it was just the screen LVDS cable or the LCD panel you’d be able to see the image with the external screen and adapter.

External image is driven by the discrete GPU, thus unfortunately that answers your question with the worst possible diagnosis, fried GPU IC.

yeah, I guess you are right...

btw, is it possible that this can be fixed or replaced?

It's just easier to replace the logic board MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Mid 2012 Logic Board Replacement The guide has a listing of possible boards IFIXIT offers. Set the notification option as they tend to go quickly.

The fixing option can be evaluated too, but it depends on where you are and if you have at reasonable distance a very reputable lab that will replace the chip with a new one rather than offering a useless reball. It would be expensive but probably cheaper than a replacement board.

Have you tried SMC and/or PRAM/NVRAM resets? If not, I suggest trying those resets.
