Most likely the Flex Cable #5 came loose from the Logic Board. This is the Flex Ribbon for all the buttons you describe. Flex Cable #5 has to simply be pushed back down onto Logic Board connector.

hey brad

thanks for your quick response. i was hoping and to be honest expecting to hear something like this. now the question remains which ifixit.com manual i can adhere to get the flexcable back on again. you must understand i never saw my phone from inside before.

regards

Any of the manuals for the 3g or 3gs will get you to Connector #5, it's at the top, just left of the SIM Bay. I would watch a few youtube videos on opening iPhone with Suction Cup method. You have to open iPhone very slowly and carefully or you will damage ribbons at Top of iPhone especially #3. Also you risk damaging LCD because it is sensitive to repairs when the iPhone is ON. If LCD Flex #1 becomes loose during opening or repair it might be best to push Flex #5 back correctly and then Power OFF iPhone before trying to reseat Flex #1. Or maybe at least wait a couple of minutes so iPhone goes into Sleep Mode before you try to reseat Flex #1. If it was me I would turn OFF iPhone. But maybe only Sleep Mode is necessary to protect the LCD, I do not know.

hey brad! what do you like more, chief or boss? at least you earn one of those titles :-)

i opened the iphone very gently and then already saw that flex cable #5 is off the logic board. it was sort of tricky to put it into place, cautious as i was (raw egg like!). but after that i immediately closed the phone again (not to break the lcd or anything else), and... heureka: the power button button made my phone go ON again! so every other button works, too.

oh, now i got it: master ;-)

thank you brad.
