Won't charge after battery replacement

Hi

I replaced the battery and the unit won’t turn on - the little battery LED on the logic board lights (and blinks when I do the SMC reset) but that’s about all that happens.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Try this:

To get a spontaneous reboot, disconnect the mag-safe adapter, unplug the battery. Press and hold the power on button for 10 seconds. Reconnect the battery and mag-safe and it should start up on its own.

UPDATE

See step# 5 of this guide. The thing that says on it “Battery Disconnect”.

Yes I know it only has a USB C connector, unplug the one supplying power!

Thanks for the advice @mayer - this model has a USB-C connection only and the battery does not have a cable connecting it.

Thanks for the clarification! Unfortunately the problem remains. I think it's a brick!

@arbt Do you still have the original battery? If so let’s plug that one back in and see if this behavior continues. I have a hunch that it is a defective battery…

@ajcooke01 thanks for your reply. Unfortunately not really, I put it outside after removal and it is probably not in a fit state to stick back in.

@arbt Dang. That sucks. However we will need to test a new battery. Where did you get the replacement battery from?

da

Yes, it does suck, @ajcooke01 :)! It was purchased from AYIPE from Amazon (UK).

The original problem was that the laptop kept shutting off randomly and locking up - the screen would freeze and the trackpad stopped 'clicking'. The clock would often reset and in addition to that the battery would not hold, so I decided to just replace it and take it from there.

Perhaps there is something else going on?

The laptop had not been used for quite some time so I just put this down to a battery issue.

@arbt Alright, well to rule out the battery (as i said before) we will need to try a new one. iFixit sells MacBook batteries too and if it is not the problem, we can return it quick and easy and you can get your money back. Let’s hope that MacBook boots up with this one ;-)

Hey @ajcooke01 - unfortunately in the UK iFixit don't seem to sell the battery. Instead I will try another from Amazon and see how I get on...

Please check to make sure it is seated all the way.

If so then unplug the battery and then make sure nothing like a piece of plastic from shipping is covering the pins.

Typically when something doesn’t charge that's new it leads towards a poor connection to the motherboard. Especially if it detects it.

@sahrch - thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I already tried re-seating the logic board. I checked that there was no plastic covering the battery connections.

Did it work with the previous battery and you replaced it for other reasons? You could buy another battery hoping that will fix it but if you bought it off amazon I would think it would be working. Maybe when putting it in you messed up another component or possible even caused static to mess up something else
