MacBook reads SSD but suddenly freezes while booting from it

My MacBook Pro (early 2011, running 10.13) suddenly stopped booting properly from the Samsung Evo 850 SSD I replaced the old HDD with. If I boot from the HDD I can read and run programs from the SSD but if I try and boot it hangs about two thirds of the way through. I tried SMC reset, pvram reset, ran first aid (said it was all good), and tried to boot in safe mode ( wouldn't work) and nothing seems to get it to boot properly. I am supremely confused by this. I have read many other comment streams on this site but none of them address what's happened to me except to say swap out the SATA cable. I am a bit co fused as to why the drive would work read fine if it was the SATA cable. If anyone could help that would rule as I cannot afford a new Mac and I require one to do my work.

One of the issues upgrading to a SSD is the data rate thru the SATA cable is higher. If you have the older cable it will often respond like this. In addition the rough aluminum surface of the uppercase wears the cable. I strongly recommend you apply a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over. In addition, don’t fold the cable with tight creases! Your want round arcs at the corners. Here’s the better cable MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable (Yes, this is the 2012 systems cable) and here’s the IFIXIT guide you’ll need to follow Sostituzione Cavo hard drive MacBook Pro 13" Unibody inizio 2011

Hi Dan thanks for the heads-up. Would this explain the fact I can still use the drive normally? Why would it have trouble booting yet I can run all sorts of programs, save and open files from that drive. It's a bit confusing for me.

The best way I can explain this is the difference between a Jeep which can go over rough roads and a Porsche which will beat it on a drag race but can't navigate the rough roads in the deep woods of Canada! But, their are places both work like going to the shopping mall on nice paved roads, but going slow!

Here you're stressing the connection when you boot up the system so the SSD will fail but your HDD will be fine, Your other test you used an external case to hold the one of the drives which booted up your system from the HDD and access the SSD's files which is less stressful so it has no problem.

If you do a google search within IFIXIT you'll see quite a few people have had this issue! Not only the 13" model but the 15" as well.

If you are using a optical drive carrier for your drive you can also encounter another issue which is related to the system its self. Review this OWC - Data Doubler If you have one of the systems with a Red note review the note at the bottom. Basically the optical drive SATA port is not able to support SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) so auto sense drives like Samsung 850 EVO can't figure out the real SATA I/O speed. Here you'll need a fixed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive for the optical bay.

I strongly recommend you don't move the HD over to the optical bay as the HD bay has additional circuitry to protect the HD from crashing.

I think what they meant when they said to replace the SATA cable is to replace the Hard Drive/Solid State Drive cable. If so it’s super easy and also inexpensive to do so.

You need a working SATA cable in order to run your OS fine and if you have a damaged or defective one your SSD/HD cannot be properly read. This “confuses” the Logic Board therefore making it impossible to use the computer.

Thanks Aaron, I appreciate your help and input but my computer functions just fine when I boot from the HDD and it still allows me to read, write and run apps from the SSD. My confusion is around why I can use the SSD just fine but not boot from it like I used to do. It gets hung up on the Apple logo loading screen at 2/3rds when I try and boot from the SSD. This just happened out of the blue one day.

@ajcooke01 look at the difference in the 2012 cable vs the 2011 cable.

da

@mayer isn't the early 2011 cable the one he/she needs? I acknowledge the difference but... yeah aren't we working with a 2011? Dan has this one covered too so everyone will pretty much ignore my answer any who.

da

@ajcooke01 you didn't do what I asked, did you?

da

@mayer Yes I did sir, what are you trying to get at? I fail to see what you are trying to point me towards...
