iPhone 6 Touch ID not working after screen replacment

So I just replaced the original screen which was cracked on my iPhone 6 against a new one which is not an original Apple screen, I used the old home button which belongs to this phone, but I still get the Touch ID not working error. I did the screen replacement myself.

Shouldn’t the Touch ID work as long as you use the original home button that came with the iPhone 6, meaning the home button and motherboard that belongs together, at least on such an old phone as an iPhone 6?

I thought that only if you use a totally new home button that doesn´t “match” the motherboard then the Touch ID will not work?

Every time I start up the iPhone 6 I get an error message saying that the Touch ID is not working or something along those lines, and when I go into settings and try to turn on the Touch ID function I get an error message.

The iPhone 6 has iOS 10.1.1 if that makes any difference, and I would not like to try to update to the latest 11.4.1 or restore the phone unless I know for sure that that will fix the Touch ID.

Is there any way to fix this myself (without going to Apple and put a lot of money on such an old phone), or is it totally impossible and I should just forget about the Touch ID function?

You are correct that using the original Home Button is all you need to do to retain TouchID functionality. However, the Home Button and/or the Home Button Link Flex is easily damaged when its being transferred and this is the most likely issue you are facing.

Open up the phone again and closely inspect the Home Button itself. It has a tiny flex that goes to the connector but also a tiny flex that loops back on itself on the other side as well. Use magnification and check for tears. If the problem is with the Home Button itself, then there is nothing you can do, only Apple can replace it.

The other possibility is the Home Button Link Flex. This flex runs underneath the heat shield and has a connector at either end to “connect” the Home Button to the logic board. What typically happens is that the flex is damaged when removing the HB, usually because people use a sharp tool to disconnect the connectors. Again, use magnification to inspect this carefully. This flex can be easily replaced by following this guide.

Thanks for your answer. I did not remove the cable from the heat shield, I just transferred the whole heat shield with the cable already mounted on it, so I don't think that's the problem, or actually it could have had that problem from before since I got the phone for free due to the screen bei g broken, didn't get much info about the phone more than that the screen was broken.

Yes I will have open the phone up again and check.

But shouldn't the whole home button stop to work if the flex cable had a tear, or do the touch ID function has its own flex cable on the home button?

Is it the black little flex cable that goes from the home button itself that I should check closely?

da

It really depends on how bad the tear is. Also, the connector at the end of the Link Flex is often damaged from prying it away from the home button, especially on DIY repairs.

da

I thought I was very careful with every step since I know how easy these things break, but of course there's the possibility that I broke something? I will have to check the cable closely.

The other thing that I noticed is that the proximity sensor doesn't seem to work, when I get a call and pick up the phone the display does not turn off, so I often accidentally touch some buttons on the display. But the automatic brightness control seems to work fine, doesn't they both use the same sensor?

Any ideas what most often causes this kind of error? I exchanged the front camera / speaker/ proximity sensor myself from the cracked screen to the new one.

da

For the proximity sensor, it could be an alignment issue as well. Otherwise, it could be a bad flex or something is wrong with the replacement screen. When you have too many variables, sometimes it worthwhile to go back to the original conditions, i.e. use the original cracked screen and work your way from there.

da

I just exchanged the front camera /speaker assembly against a one from an broken iPhone 6s i had laying around, so now the proximity sensor is working. But you could be right that it could have been an alignment issue from when I transferred the front camera/speaker assembly from the cracked screen to the new screen?

So I can verify that the front facing camera and speaker assembly from an iPhone 6s works fine on an iPhone 6.

I can also verify that the rear iSight camera from an iPhone 6s is NOT working on a iPhone 6. I was curious so I tried it while I was at it. The iPhone 6 didn't even turn on when the 6S rear camera was installed on the iPhone 6, as soon as I removed the 6S camera the iPhone 6 turned on again.

You can try to open the phone up again and try to reconnect all the connectors.

If that doesn’t work then you may have to try to restore. You can restore without upgrading if you restore on the phone itself.

Tried restoring the iPhone 6 from inside the phone but that didn't help, still Touch ID error.

Does somebody know if it actually should work with the original home button after a screen replacement with a non original screen, and when the screen replacement has been done by yourself or by a shop which is not Apple certified?

Reading through the comments I see that you removed the heat shield with the button still attached. This could have caused some micro damage unless there is a visible tear. The original home button will work with aftermarket screens for the simple fact that the heat shield you are transferring is original and that’s what the home button connects to, to carry the signal. Now, if you can get your hands on another heat shield, that would let you know if it’s the home button or heat shield since the heat shield has the cable on it that connects the home button to the mainboard.

Well I didn't transfer the heat shield and the home button in one piece, instead I first removed the home button by popping off the home button connector from the flex cable that runs underneath the heat shield, and then I transferred the heat shield /home button cable over to the new screen, and after that I installed the old home button to the new screen. So the home button and the heat shield was transferred separately.

And I did not remove or even touch the black tape thats on top of the heat shield / home button cable, since I just transferred the whole heat shield / home button cable assembly together in one go.

So I doubt the home button cable that runs along the heat shield has been damaged by me?

And I know the phone didn't have the Touch ID error before the screen was exchanged.

da

Ok. Where you able to test another heat shield?

da

No, I have no access right now to another iPhone 6 heatshield. I checked the home button cable briefly with a microscope but couldn't see any obvious micro tears.

I read some people have restored Touch ID functionality by restoring the iPhone as a new phone, but in my case I don´t want to do that since I don´t want to update to the latest iOS version.
