SSD drive not showing in disk utility

My MacBook Pro was dropped and the HD broke, I went to repair it and long story short, it had to be booted from an external HD. A while later I stupidly formatted it and decided to purchase an SSD to prevent any more breakages. When I pressed CMD R on bootup and clicked “reinstall osx mountain lion” the SSD did not show up. I looked into it and there is no way for me to make a bootable USB drive to install osx on it as the Mac is my only one. Is there any way to to fix this or is my Mac permanently broken. My friend has a Mac and I was wondering if downloading it from her pc is viable.

Exactly with MacBook Pro do you have? I ask because the machine you selected uses a Apple priority blade. Also if you have installed High Sierra it may have reformatted the drive APFS. I am currently pulling my hair out fighting with APFS machines recognizing my external GUID formatted USB drives. Maybe @danj can shed some light on this for us.

da

What is the MacOS you have on your system (before you dropped it) and what was the external HD's MacOS you are trying to boot up from?

da

Like, what filesystem you formatted your MacBook with? What OS it has now? Hope your SSD is not in RAW format. You can Get Help Online through Recovery Mode. If you merely formatted your Mac then your MacBook should not be considered as broken.

In response to @danj, the os was mountain lion and the only things I have which I can use are the built in system functions and a brand new SSD. The previously used HDD which I used to boot from was wiped

In response to @batmac , the SSD is new and I have not formatted anything yet as the SSD does not show up in disk utility when I boot it with CMD R.

The machine icon you have selected is incorrect. This is not a Retina machine. Was this hard drive ever hooked up to a machine running High Sierra? The machine you pictured has major problems with the Hard Drive/IR cable. If so it may have gotten APFS formatted. If your old drive still boots, hook it up via a USB to SATA adapter and boot from it. Then use Disk Utilities to try to format it GUID Mac OS X extended Journalled.

To make sure of exactly which machine you have, go here and insert your serial number from the back of your machine, then tell us what you have.

Thank you for the link, the details should be as accurate as possible now, I got the retina display confused from my retina iPad. I no longer have the drive which the Mac booted from and the SSD which is currently in there is fresh from Amazon. Is it necessary to have a booting Mac to solve this issue or is there a way to do it elsewhere, E.G. CMD R, on a Windows machine. Also, are you suggesting that I will need a replacement sata cord or is my current one still functional?

Personally I would plug in my internet ethernet cable and try an internet install. Yes, I highly recommend replacing that cable. For a while even Apple was replacing them for free. Look at the cable and all the marks on it where it comes over that last step and onto the optical drive. That's where it gets damaged most of the time. I put pads on either side of the cable in that location to prevent the bottom case from contacting it.

Thank you, I will try to get it sorted as soon as possible. Would you happen to know how I could do an internet install as the drive does not show up in the install osx section (in the image on the question), or is that simply because of the cable.
