As a matter good practice I always replace the HD SATA cable with the better one when changing the drive out: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable And yes! this is for the 2012 model and also works on the 2011 models as well. I also apply electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over as the rough aluminum surface can damage the cable. Lastly, don’t bend the folds! You want it to arc not be a crisp fold.

What is the benefit of changing cable

The part tends to wear out overtime and as you've moved to a more powerful drive the older cable can't carry the data across as well.

Yes this will work fine, are you planing to clone your data to the new drive or do a fresh install?

You will need some sort of SATA to USB adapter to transfer your data if you want to do so. Startech has some good ones.https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-SATA....
