My screen does the same thing. It stays black when someone tries to call me. I can't answer it. I tried swiping screen and pushing button on the side. I am only call the person back after they are done ringing. Then I can go back into my phone and try to redial them. I have Android phone. Why does this happen? Frustrating that I can't answer an incoming call.

Hi, could be your proximity sensor on your phone. They go black so you don’t hang up on people with your cheek during a call, but it should come back immediately after you take it away from your face. Depending on your phone model, it may allow you to adjusted this in settings.

However, a few things to check:

  1. Have you recently started using a new case? It could be triggering the proximity sensor.
  2. Is the sensor area dirty?
  3. Have you tried a reset lately? Sometimes the classic ‘turn it off/on again’ works magic.

Its not the sensor. IAs soon as the phone rings the screen goes black. Im mot even around the phone! It doesnt clear off until the caller has hung up. Then you can redail the missed call and the screen is fine. I have tried to reboot. Nothing works. Very frustrated and ready to pitch the phone!

I disagree. If the sensor is malfunctioning it may be reporting to the phone that it's up against your face even though it isn't. In that case, the phone will work normally until you get a phone call, at which point it checks the proximity sensor and thinks you've already got it to your ear, so it turns off the display.

Unfortunately I don't have any information on how to physically replace the sensor on this phone, but there are several articles online about misbehaving proximity sensors on Android phones that might be of use.

I have the SAME EXACT thing going on with my phone. You're right. It's not a sensor. It's after you set phone down for a while when screen goes dark. Then when someone calls, screen stays dark. There's nothing to swipe to answer it. U have to wait till they hang up. Then you can go back in and redial their number. If you are already messing with your phone before the screen goes dark, there's no problem answering it. It's only after there hasn't been any use for a few minutes when it goes dark that it stays dark on an incoming call no matter what buttons u push or even the on/ off button. It's very frustrating when you can't answer the phone. They need to fix this problem with the Androids.
