Replace Flash Drive / More memory

I have a fairly new Mac Book Pro with a 250 GB Drive.

Is it possible (and not too much trouble)

I would like to replace the drive with a higher capacity drive.

@danj this may be the next route to take, if the SSD is soldered to the Logic Board like the iMac Pro's. However, I thought they were seating them like RAM chips into the Logic Boards and only soldering RAM, 2017 models probably kick off the all soldering then...

Lets clarify - The iMac Pro flash storage is not soldered to the logic board but to custom modules. Review the IFIXIT teardown.

The older retina 2016 and older had a removable SSD blade module. Here's a good reference on what you could have gotten: The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs

The flash chips in the Touch Bar systems are custom and you can't exceed what Apple contracted. So double dammed!.

Hey Michael

What a great MacBook you have! The SSD or the Flash Storage that is in the MacBook is definitely upgradeable. However, note that the SSD inside is not a traditional looking drive, instead it is a chip that looks very similar to RAM.

These parts are available even at Best Buy which you should be able to get fairly easy. You will need to backup the MacBook to an external drive to get the data from the old drive. Once you install the new one you can restore your data through the Cloud Recovery by pressing "Command" and "R" key before hitting the power button.

Although it's sad to say that the RAM that has been built into the newer Mac's starting from 2011+ are now soldered to the Logic Board like the CPU's are. You could definitely upgrade the RAM and the CPU together, but you would then be paying a lot because you would need to buy a new Logic Board to do so.

Good Luck!

@techstuff & @minutt - Oops! This system does not have replaceable RAM or storage! The new Touch Bar systems have soldered RAM and storage, nothing possible internally. Sorry ;-{
