MacBook Pro A1502 Internal display not working or detected.

Hi all, hope there's someone out there that can help, I've just signed up for a home learning degree course and the laptop has had a wobbler! I've spent all day today reading everything I can find and trying to find the issue but I've had no joy so thought I'd ask on here as it seems the most knowledgable place!

My mid-2014 MBP 13" retina display is not detected by the system on bootup and therefore I have a black screen. I'll try and sumarize the symptoms as best I can:

  • An external display (TV) connected via the HDMI port works proving that the machine itself is working fine.
  • There is no backlight working or any image on the screen when a torch is shone through the Apple logo (Not surprising as the display is not even detected).
  • The brightness buttons (F1 & F2) do nothing. (Not surprising as the display is not even detected).
  • The camera, WIFI, Bluetooth, internal speakers & all USB ports work fine.
  • On startup, the external monitor shows the apple logo and a progress bar which fills up in about 15 seconds and the screen resolution changes halfway through this. (I presume this is the MBP looking for then adjusting for a display device?)
  • The fault is not intermittent, it refused to work when opening the case one day and has not worked since.

I have spent the day trying to fix it and have tried/looked at the following:

  • Removed bottom casing and inspected what I could see. No corrosion or obvious issues.
  • Removed the screen to logic board cable (both ends), cleaned and re-inserted.
  • Ran diagnostics and got the codes VFD004 (issue with display) and VFD005 (issue with graphics processor).
  • PRAM & SMC resets done.
  • Hard drive wiped, reformatted, repartitioned and High Sierra installed.

I am now at a bit of a loss as I am struggling to find further info anywhere. I do think that the GPU is fine and that the connections on the cable are good. Can anyone confirm that the backlight is fed from a cable other than the screen to logic board? Is it worth taking the logic board out and inspecting the top of it? Also, is it possible that the LCD unit has died catastrophically and this is causing the issues?

Obviously any other suggestions are very welcome and I'll reply with any more info if it would help anyone to diagnose further.

Thanks,

Dave.

There are only two things I think it could be given your extensive and very well thought out troubleshooting.

1. There is liquid damage that is not seeable. Perhaps on the opposite side of the seeable motherboard or tucked away in a corner.

2. The LCD has gone bad (somehow) and it would need to be replaced. Seeing as that this is a retina MacBook an LCD replacement can be expensive.

If you're willing to take on the challenge of taking out your motherboard I would take it out and look for any signs of moisture, especially around the display connector. If you see any, anything at all, take a soft-bristled toothbrush and some Isopropyl alcohol and scrub it clean.

Thanks for the reply Matt,

You’re confirming my own opinion I think. I’ve havent a problem taking the motherboard out but obviously it’s a time consuming job and I’d had enough after 6 hours earlier today!

As for the LCD, it’s near £300 for a refurb unit which is a lot of money when I can’t guarantee that that’s the issue.

Dave.
