Reliable suppliers of a new laptop battery etc

I need to buy a new battery for my old HP Pavilion g series laptop PC. (iFixit's own EU parts store doesn't seem to do parts for this.)

The part number has been identified to me by one of HP's suppliers which has quoted a high price with no option about its being delivered by courier. But there seem to be lots of other suppliers offering this numbered part on Amazon (for instance) at wildly varying prices. I've no idea which suppliers are trustworthy and which to choose.

Some entries say that the battery has 6 cells, some 9 and some 12 - which is best?

Update (07/15/2018)

I thought it was a fairly basic laptop, since I bought this model mostly for office work rather than gaming etc.

The system specifications look like this:

Version: 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601

OS Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation

System Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard

System Model: HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC

System Type: x64-based PC

Processor: AMD E2-3000M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics, 1800 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)

BIOS Version/Date: Insyde F.6A, 13/05/2013

SMBIOS Version: 2.7

Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB

Total Physical Memory (RAM): 3.48 GB

The Amazon listings don't include the wattage per hour but I can see some Ninjabatt 12 cell batteries rated at 95Wh amongst them, with a supposedly regular price of nearly £60 - which isn't far off what I've been quoted. It's the addition of delivery charges plus VAT on everything which made the quote seem so high.

You really don't need a large battery for an AMD E2 system. Yes, the 12 cell 95Wh will run basically forever on a single charge but it's WAY more then I'd recommend for that.

I'd probably look at a 6 or 9 cell to avoid the import tariffs.

I looked through the service manual linked by @jayeff and I think you should get the 593554-001 (55Wh) battery. It isn't much more in capacity then the original 47Wh (593553-001), but it will give you a moderate capacity increase that you will notice in the runtime of your laptop.

As far as I can tell from that service manual, there is no 95Wh option from HP. If you're talking 3rd party it may exist, but I think it's way more then you need for an AMD E2 laptop. Not only is it expensive but it's so close to 100Wh the carriers may give you a headache and a half to get one of those.

In terms of suppliers I stay away from 3rd party as much as possible, but if the price is right on a good 3rd party I may get that. Generally speaking I deal with Dell (but I do deal with SOME HP equipment) and Dell competes with the 3rd parties on price most of the time but companies like HP do not. I wouldn't hesitate to go 3rd party with HP.

I like brands I can get locally like the Batteries Plus laptop batteries they sell. It's going to cost more but you can go to a store and get it replaced if it fails, unlike most online sellers.

You guys are amazingly informative and I hope that I've understood most of that. Thank you all so much, especially for the manual, @jayeff.

Still confused by the potential concerns over tariffs and couriers, let alone hazardous handling fees, but not sure if that's relevant in the UK anyway. I use this old laptop mostly at my desk. It's too heavy to carry far outside the house and certainly never gets taken abroad; no need to take travelling complications into account.

The customer feedback on the Ninjabatt battery said that it protrudes (someone said about 3cm) from the laptop base but it also has rubber feet so is clearly designed for this; it gives a better angle for working and helps to mitigate the laptop's tendency to overheat. (I've had it checked but it didn't need cleaning out.) I've been propping up the back of the laptop for years but an integral support would be much better.

The original battery is sold as having a three-hour life but would run out of charge after much less than that (at its best; now very much less) without a mains lead. I'd rather have a significantly better one than either of those listed in the manual, especially to use the laptop for online viewing etc away from my desk. I also do a lot of multi-source research (which kept burning out the civil service's Dell desk-top computers!), so would rather go for higher-capacity computer equipment generally.

Batteries Plus can't help, as their UK online offering doesn't include laptop batteries at all. HP don't supply replacement batteries for this model any more - the online help assistant just gave me a list of spare parts dealers - so I seem to be stuck with buying a new battery which is made and supplied by third parties anyway.

Since the Note 7, shipping carriers get paranoid about anything with a lithium ion battery or replacement batteries. The concern is more that they will demand something that drives the price up. I suspect most won't hassle you but if they do they are a headache and a half to deal with. I suspect a sub 100Wh battery is prime material for such headaches (or rejection).

I think there's a case for high Wh batteries close to the 100Wh plane limit, but I didn't think it made sense looking at the specs under the assumption you were looking into a replacement just to replace a worn OEM pack. Hopefully that makes sense.

I had no idea you couldn't buy laptop batteries from Batteries Plus in the UK - I picked up on the UK part but not that you can't do it. I'm from the US so I can buy them from Batteries Plus, which is normal to me. There will always be a country information barrier regardless of how well someone understands other countries without clarifications like yours, as the Batteries Plus recommendation revealed. While I still want to remain 100Wh to err on the side of caution, I did find 2 batteries available in the UK.

* General search (UK)

* DTK

* NinjaBatt

I think the NinjaBatt looks like the best of the few high capacity batteries I can find available on Amazon UK. The DTK isn't bad for the reviews, but it looks very generic. I would try and get the NinjaBatt pack.

Thanks for this and for reviewing the possibilities on Amazon UK; that really is kind of you.

It's immensely reassuring to have my inclination to choose that particular replacement seconded by someone so much more experienced in computer stuff than I am.

It's now been ordered, so I'm hoping that it's as good as the happy previous buyers said!

The days of using Amazon US are over for situations like yours where there's a country variation. It's a necessity to avoid batteries you can't get in other countries.

Hi @dianaw ,

What is the stated capacity of your current battery (should be printed on the battery - along with the part number hopefully), and were you satisfied with its performance over time?

If you were, then go with one of a similar capacity, if not go for a larger capacity battery

Here’s a link to the service manual for a HP Pavilion G6 notebook. (If I’ve got the incorrect one, just search for HP Pavilion (insert full model number) service manual to get the correct one)

Scroll to p.43 to view the part(s) numbers for the batteries. You will notice that the 2 batteries listed are both 6 cell with one having about 16% more capacity than the other.

If you search online using the part number only in the search term of your browser, you’ll get results for suppliers.

With regard to the larger 95W battery, I agree with @nick that it may be more than you need. Also, and I’m not totally sure of this but the 95W battery may have a larger protuberance in its’ design so that it makes the laptop sit up higher at the back than the smaller capacity ones and also makes it wider (deeper?) at that point, which may not suit you.

The 9/12 cell batteries lift the laptop up a few inches with HP. It doesn't make the laptop fatter, generally; most use the bottom to avoid problems in some laptop bags.

Since I'm in the US, I don't have the problems the OP has - even if it's in excess for the machine I'm buying it for it generally isn't going to kill me in terms of problems like that. I'd probably have to pay a hazardous handling fee because it's nearly 100Wh, but that's MUCH lower then tariffs.

da

Hi @nick ,

OK.

I thought that because the battery sticks out further it would make it wider at that point i.e. depth of laptop with lid closed, from top of lid to bottom of battery as opposed to the same with a smaller capacity battery

da

I don't see one from HP as an OEM option, BUT I know 3rd party vendors are crazy enough to make them. I think the OP may be referring to a 3rd party 95Wh battery based on the Ninjabatt reference.

I would probably recommend a 6/9 cell well under 100Wh to someone in a country with tariffs and potential shipping headaches. This isn't as bad in the US if you really want it since you're not going to run into as many issues.

da

Hi @nick,

You're right.

I was dealing with a question a few months ago where the OP was complaining about the 95W batteries sticking out too far on his HP laptop, even though he wanted larger capacity and he was listing 3rd party manufacturers. In the end I advised him that he couldn't have it both ways with what was available i.e. same size battery with larger capacity.

Cheers.

You can't cram 21650's in most laptop packs because it'll bulge worse then a 18650 stack (not to mention the BMS will need to be changed). Yes they deliver more amps so you get absurd Wh ratings with less cells but it's going to be worse then a 95Wh with a bottom bump. It doesn't bother me but I get why it bothers some people; it's awkward.

I also suspect you'll exceed 100Wh... Which is a no-no for airplanes. That's why most stop at 95Wh; it's enough to run forever without the plane headache.
