How long fan greasing lasts?

I recently had a problem with a very noisy fan. Everyone was saying I should replace it due to it already being worn out. I ordered a new fan for replacement from powerbookmedic. Also, I disassembled, cleaned and greased my noisy fan with a thick grease (technical petrolatum). This has been more than 2 months ago and still going fine. I am starting to think it can last a lot longer, but even if not — I wouldn't have any problem with repeating a greasing process again. I don't know what should I do with a new fan which I ordered. It is simply lying around useless. What is your experience with noisy fan greasing? How long can a thick grease last inside the fan bearing? And maybe anybody needs a new right fan for a good price?

Well you did more harm than good here ;-{

These fans are designed to run with very little lubrication! They use sintered bronze bearings which have been pressured oiled so they don’t technically need additional lubrication. Over time dust and grit can get into the bearing and wear the bearing so some people attempt to oil the bearings. While at the time you do lube the bearing it may sound much better but the oil or grease will attract more dust and grit. In addition the added friction of grease for such a tiny bearing will cause your fan to heat up and will drain the battery quicker.

So what to do?? I would take the fan out and use a oilless spray cleaner to remove the grease and then use a little WD40

The fan actually sounds "like new", pretty sure about that... Okay, the fan heat up issue looks like the most important. I rarely use battery full time so the drain is a non-issue. But how much fan heat up can add to the heat of the whole system? A fraction of a degree?

Okay... While I was writing this I checked very closely and I think I can hear a very quiet buzz, I am not even sure it is there. So probably I will use my new fan after all... Regarding WD40 — I am afraid that the actual wear out of the fan, if it happened, won't allow greaseless operation. A thick grease may do a support function for a shaft which in another case can be displaced, that's what I thought

I wouldn’t use grease! You want a thin oil and you don’t want to use to much. I would dampen a cotton swab and place that on the bearing. I would use a watch oil or WD40.

The heat issue is not the system it’s the fan which will overheat with the extra friction with grease.

Yeah, I mean how it will do any harm with fan overheat? It can either add up to the heat of the whole system which is always not good or harm the fan itself. But considering that the other option is to replace the fan it becames non-relevant. WD40 — okay, I will try if I find it. At first I confused WD40 with white spirit and thought it is not oil at all... But the whole topic of fan greasing is somewhat controversial. Every single person recommends different oils and greases. Graphite grease, thick grease, thin grease, transmission oil, and so on and so forth

The fan has to fight the added friction of the grease so it will overheat and fail its that simple!

You wouldn't use grease or anything more that a very light weight oil in a fine watch as the mechanism is so delicate.

Here the bearing is self lubricating as the bearing is treated with oil. A sintered bearing is porous which is how the bearing stays oiled. Using anything heavy will clog the pores which is why a very light weight old is needed watch oil or WD40 are very light weight oils. In addition you want to use very little as oil is a dust magnet! Which is why the sintered bearing is used.

If you read through all of the IFIXIT answers you will find we only recommend a light weight oil on any computer fan bearing so I have no idea where you've seen grease of any type or much of anything else. All you'll find are people who have use the incorrect lube having issues.
