Mackie cr4s only play sound through headphones

Ive had a pair of mackie cr4s for over a year now and cant say ive used them too much. When i went to use them last week they turned on but no sound was coming out, i plugged some headphones in and the sound played perfectly through them? I also noticed that when i turn them off by the switch on the powered monitor, sound will come out the speakers for a second before they turn off? Any help appreciated.

They look really dark when I uploaded them so I'm guessing they won't be much help

Hi I have similar problem with Mackie CR 4, the sounds can only be heard trough headphones. Pls help with the issues, thank you.

da

OMG I have exactly the same Problem with Mackie CR 4 too.

Greetings from Switzerland

Seems to be a well known problem with them. Just need to know how to fix it

da

I have the same problem too. For a while the sound came on briefly after switching on but no nothing except through the headphones. Mackie must be aware of this problem.

I suspect that the amplifier section has a problem. There are protection circuits that will cut off the output to the speakers to prevent the speakers from damage. Without opening up the amp section and taking measurements, I can't say for sure what is faulty.

The headphones take significantly less power and may be tapped at the pre-amp level. I don't have a service manual available at this time for this so some of this is speculation based upon working on similar devices for 30+ years. If you can gain access to the amp section, post a few photos here and I may be able to direct you on what to check.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to comment back. I have opened the powered speaker to look at the amp and circuit board but couldn't see anything obvious (obvious signs of damage for someone who doesn't look inside speakers much) I will post some pictures either later on or tomorrow. I just think it's odd that if if I turn the speakers off at the back whilst laying music the sound actually comes out for a second as normal. Thanks again and hopefully when I post some pics you spot an easy fix

The protection circuit is triggered by DC voltage on the speaker line. Once the unit is turned off, that DC will decrease. Once it gets low enough, the circuit will release. This is likely the reason you hear a little bit.

da

Ahh that makes sense. I'll post some pictures now but it's very cramped so maybe hard to see anything

This is exactly what is going on with mine right now. Is there any way to fix it if it is an amp problem?

Had the same issue, caused by the heat around Z4 diode. Fixed by replacing the dead cap C74 (100u/16v) and the diode Z4 (12v 1W zener 1N4742), check maybe you need to replace more components, R2 for example. This area of the pcb is generating “mute” signal for the amp, so no wonder the trick of cutting “mute” pin of tda7265 works sometimes

What is the value of R2? Mine is badly burn.

da

If I remember correctly, R1/R2 were "load resistors" of 100 Ohm, and they were heating up badly. So I replaced them with much bigger 5 Watt 150 Ohm resistors, to prevent the future heat damage. Sorry for the late answer :)

Does Sound Quality Change by changing R2? My CR5BT is not giving quality of monitors it's like normal speakers..!! And please tell me exact value of R1 & R2 for best quality sound ??

Exact same problem with Cr5.

I saw some workarounds suggested in the following link, but they didn’t help me.

I’m angry that I didn’t find out about this issue before buying the %#*@ things, I’ve used them for less than 8 months!

++No audio coming out of Mackie CR3 Studio Monitors

I had the same problem and I managed to solve it without spending more than 5 dollars, you only need to replace 5 very economical components and 30 minutes send me an email and I will explain how to repair them. Greetings.  ar.genome@gmail.com

If the repair was that simple, please post the parts and a description here. This will help the most people.

I agree with ABRSVC. If you knew how to fix them surely you would just post the answer on here? After all this a place to share knowledge. It definitely seems to be a common problem with mackies

I have the same problem here with the CR4. I did cut the mute lug on the power amp chip, but that didn’t help. My L/R switch is very loose and faulty, if I push it it sometimes works and can I hear both speakers. And then sometimes a left or right speaker mutes, or both. Very annoying…. what a poor build.

Not sure if I can replace or take out that switch?
