Alternative to OEM power supply

I have an M4405 Power Mac G3 300 Minitower that I'm looking to restore. The computer was outside for a long time, and a large portion of the computer is rusty and corroded. The outside of the power supply is fairly rusty, and I'm a bit too scared to try to open it up and clean the inside or outside of it, and I get the impression that it would be a bad idea anyway to try to use a 20+ year old power supply in a computer. I was wondering if there were any alternative power supplies I could buy for this computer, as the original 661-1496 or API-6120 one is very expensive and hard to find. Apologies if this is an obvious question, I'm used to laptops and don't know much about standardized desktop parts. Thanks!

Since it seems like I might be updating this a lot, I'm putting all my pictures into an album so this page isn't so crowded.

Can you post a pic of the power supply connector? And a pic of the label on the power supply, if there is one. Most computers use the same voltages and if you can match it up it may work.

Thanks @crowbot, I edited them into the original post.

Slightly unrelated minor and unimportant question, but is it possible to dismantle the side panel? I'd like to clean it out since it's very dirty and rusty but it looks like it would require me to irreparably break off a bunch of plastic securing clips.

@ezra we like the images on here for a particular reason. Let's say in 10 years somebody comes along and is looking for an answer exactly like yours. If we post the images on here, they will remain. If you place them on sites like the one you are using, those images will most likely no longer be there. ifixit questions/answer will be here for a very long time :-) Keep it simple, post the important ones on here.

@oldturkey03 thanks for deciding which ones were important. I thought Imgur would be a safe long term choice of hosting, but I definitely understand you wanting to keep everything on this site. I hope that it's okay that this question is staying active; I don't want my low priority project to be pushing down people with serious problems.

@ezra post some more picture of your whole setup and let us see which side panel. It maybe riveted and you could remove the rivets etc.

Block Image

this is what your chassis looks like with everything removed. The side panel appears to be riveted but a close up picture would verify this. Get a small dremel and cut the rivet. If you are really interested in restoring it, I suggest a auto body shop since they can help you with some bead blasting etc. to remove the rust and grime. BTW it’ll help if you remove the power supply and take it apart. Let us see what the inside looks like. Most of those can actually be rebuild as well, but it depends on the damage.

You may consider replacing it with an ATX etc. power supply. Here is the pinout for your power supply

and here is the pinout for an ATX power supply

from here So as you can see it should be possible of using one of those. You will have to use your wiring harness sine you need the connector to the logic board.

I'm not currently able to remove and dismantle the power supply, maybe I can update you on that tomorrow, but I put up pictures of the side panel (I had just rinsed it off and was leaving it outside to dry). WeLoveMacs says that it's part number 922-3270, but on the panel itself it says 815-2693, which I can't find anywhere online. I was looking at ATX power supplies, and they all seem to only have one power connector on them. The one in this computer came with a second that according to the service manual was for powering a monitor through. Does it matter if a different power supply doesn't have that second outlet? I think that taking it to a body shop is outside my commitment/skill/budget, but that's a very interesting suggestion.

I may have also not clearly specified what part I was talking about. For now I just want to clean the side access panel, the first one that gets removed. Heh, I'm not ready to go that far into the computer yet to clean the other parts of the case. Thank you for your help!

Okay so the side panel -metal is held together by the plastic dowels with a slightly molten, thicker end. Makes it a bit more difficult. You could grind the ends of and later use some rivets that you could adhere into the studs after drilling a center hole. the part number 922-3270 is right, There is a difference between Apple's part numbers and the number on the panel. Best example would be a MacBook Pro motherboard having the part number of 661-5222 but the number on the actual board is 820-2533. Your part number is the correct one.

You'll be okay without the "other" power plug on the PSU. I do agree that if you want to go and restore your G3, restore the power supply as well.

Yeah @oldturkey03, I think I'm gonna leave the panel in one piece. I actually did manage to get a lot of rust off of it with a brass brush and 91% isopropyl alcohol (probably should've found something better for rust than that), but there's still a ton on it.

I posted some pictures of the power supply. I took it outside once I saw the fan housing, but the power supply itself isn't actually as bad as I originally thought it was. Does it look salvageable? If so, what would be the best and safest way to clean it?

da

@ezra consider a commercial rust remover available at good hardware or automotive supply stores for the case and panels. Your power supply needs to be taken further apart. Clean it with some 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and a brush. Use plenty of it and clean it well. Right now I think replacing the caps should do
