MacBook Pro 15 2011 black screen on 10.13.4 after reballing

Hi,

Sorry for my english.

I have 2 Macbook Pro 15 Late 2011 with the same problem.

In first time, i have reball the GPU, i have check, i maked a GPU panic test with different benchmark tools. The computer works good during 3-4 weeks.

And, apple release the Mac OS X 10.13.4 and i have install on the macs and computer boot, i see apple logo, bar progress and when i need to type my password, impossible to see the LCD.

The backlight work

When i plug external screen, i don't see nothing

When i boot on other OS under 10.13.4, work perfectly

I can install a new os under 10.13.4 on other HD or SSD

I have the same problem on 2 computers with the same board, do you have an idea? Possible some balls are not perfectly soldered when i replace the chipset.

I have use my ZM 6200 R BGA station

Thanks by advance

It seems a pretty nice Bga rework station the one you have there :)

General consensus about reballing graphic chip on the A1286 is that is a short lived repair, since faults are inside the chip and quite seldom on the solder balls between chip and board. Thus you have probably done a good job on a bad chip. Here's the opinion on the matter by someone who's got some experience with graphic chips rework: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tekqDNj...

Although I don't do rework on bigger ICs, from the number of dead boards of A1286 I've seen with clear signs of reball/reflow I share Mr. Rossmann view.

GPU chip replacement (new part) is the only way to go here.

Thanks arbaman.

So i will try to replace 2 chipset on 2 logic board and after i will check.

I back when i receive the 2 chip.

I know the risk of buy used chipset on marketplace but i don't have other solution, i will check if i have a donor for better result but not sure...

I'll let you know if it helps someone else !

@fdm Well, that's the reason why I've not yet managed to convince myself to invest in a decent rework equipment and stick with other logic board repairs. Although it would be nice to see the pile of dead boards to shrink, it seems the same difficulty in getting reliable chips applies also to MCPs of the 13" MBP and so on. It's a real pity..
