Won't turn on after attaching to car charger

One day I wanted to try out a new car charger I got and plugged in my phone didn't hear the charging sound so went to look and the phone was off haven't been able to power it on since and have tried everything. I checked the output on the car charger with a meter and it's the correct voltage so i'm thinking maybe it was a defective cable. I opened the iphone to see if maybe the battery went bad all of a sudden, I get the correct voltage on 2 pins of the four I think the other two are for charging, so I don't think the problem is the battery. Does anyone have an idea what i should try to troubleshoot next or what parts i should buy from ifixit to try and revive my phone.

Thanks in advance.

does it charge with pc/wall, is it recognised in itunes?does vibrate work? this will let you know whether it's a screen or dock problem.

Hi PollyTinTop no the phone does none of the above it seems completely dead, i t was fully charged at the time when this happened, it turned itself off and will not turn back on no matter what I do,I figured maybe the battery charger was defective and overcharged the lithium pack but as I said i measured the voltage at the output of the charger and it's a steady 5 volts I also left the phone alone for 3 weeks thinking maybe the battery got screwed somehow and needed to equalize but still nothing, i've tried all the tricks in the book to get the phone on tried dfu, hard reboot ect. and it just won't do anything.

If someone could identify what voltages I should have on the 4 pins of the battery pack at least I could eliminate a battery problem.

da

3.7mAh for the battery. Have you tried holding home then plugging in to iTunes?

da

Thanks Pollytintop yes I have tried that. I know the mah of the battery and the voltage i've had it in my hands whatg i'm looking for is what voltages i should find on which pins.

Okay now here is a goofy suggestion ;-) have you replaced the battery yet? That is where I would start since yours could easily be at the end of its anticipated lifespan. Then you also have a clean starting point for further trouble shooting. Once you have a new battery, reevaluate the charging of the iPhone. If it still should not charge, follow the advise given by Scott Millard and clean the dock connector. Also remember to check the charging fuse on your logic board. That is all I have for now and I am sure with the help of the iPhone guru's on here you will be back in action soon. Oh yeah, BTW the iPhone uses a lithium ion polymer battery. The battery has a capacity of 1219mAh and 3.7 volts ref with Standard Voltage of 3.7V and a charging limited Voltage of 4.2V and if I remember right what I read about the charging specs from an iPod (I know its not iPhone) correctly it could be charged at anywhere from 5-30VDC (remember firewire :-)) Internal circuitry regulates this down to a suitable voltage for the battery, then internally cuts off the charger when the battery shows a full charge. Good Luck.

Thanks for all your help so far but that is not the problem this happened after using a cheap chinese charger in my car the first time I plugged it in the pins on the cable were probably wired wrong.

Thank you Old Turkey this is the kind of info i'm looking for thank you very much for the photo i will pull my iphone apart again now and see if these fuses are good.

da

ok I have continuity on all the listed fuses to the immediate right in your picture where you indicated charging fuse there are two other very tiny resistors or fuses i'm not sure and I can't get any continuity out of those could that be the problem?

I tried the voltages on the battery and they are as follows I have no idea how to post a picture so i'll try to explain. With battery connector on the upper right Pin 1 far left pin 4 far right . Between pin 1 & 4 3,7 volts with positive being pin 1

Between pin 2&3 about 2.2 volts with positive being pin 2 at the actual battery terminals before the circuit board 3,7 volts you guys say to try and change the battery but the battery was perfect before I attached this chinese cable and charger. This is why i'm trying to troubleshoot if it is something other than the battery I really can't afford to change pieces at random.

But since I believe it was the charger that cause your device to fail and most likely ruined the charging circuit of the battery. The voltage of your battery does sound about right, remembering other posts on here, but that is voltage without load. Once you put a load on it, it may be failing, not charging etc. With the absence of any diagrams from apple and without any other data on the logic board, I'd go ahead and create a clean starting point, and change the battery. Again just my 2 cents.

I just had the same problem today. I ordered a cheap charger from china $5 free shipping! Was in my car, listning to a podcast, surfing on safari. All of a sudden screen dies, bluetooth disconnects. The whole thing is dead. I cant turn on, reset, or put in dfu mode. Got home tryed different charger and Itunes, still nothing. So I took it apart. Took out the battery, 4. something volts. Checked "fuses" had continuity. Put back together and powered up fine. Wtf?

Open the iPhone then disconnect and reconnect the battery cable and re-assemble, then connect to iTunes - it should allow you to restore from an iCloud backup. It worked for me.
