Why am I getting a system resources insufficient message?

When I try to boot up my Acer Aspire One ZG5 it doesn't complete the process. As it gets to the windows start up, I get an "Insufficient System Resources exist to complete the API" message.

I've tried to boot it up in safe mode to look into the installed programs to see if there's an issue there but I can't even get it to boot up in safe mode.

I took it completely apart and replaced the memory module thinking it had to be that, but it didn't help, I still get the same error message.

Can you tell me what may be causing it. If it's the motherboard it's probably not worth fixing since it's already 4 years old, but I'd like to know what else it could be that might be a cheaper fix. Any help you can give me with this would be greatly appreciated.

I would venture to say that your laptop has 1 gig or more of ram and that your operating system is XP. If such is the case please remove some RAM so that you have less than 1 gig of RAM, like 512. Then try booting your computer. There is a Hotfix for this problem: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=90909... If this doesn't work please let me know.

Thank you for your reply. I tried that and it still gives me the same message when I try to start it up. A local computer repair shop said it might be a virus and I wondered what your thoughts were on that.

Do you have suggestions for a next step or should I write it off since it has such a small memory and today's netbooks have come a long way since this was purchased almost 5 years ago?

I wondered if reinstalling the OS would help or if it might be the motherboard but I'm lost at this point.

I do not believe it is the motherboard, for a number of reasons. No way is it a virus, they just want your money. Your "Insufficient System Resources exist to complete the API" message is fairly well documented, there is even a windows "hotfix" for the problem. When I read the first line in your reply my thought was format the hard drive and reinstall the OS. My next thought was concern for what ever data you may have on the hard drive. If it was mine I would retrieve what data I needed off the hard drive format it to have a clean install of the OS and apply the hotfix before the laptop got a chance to think about hibernation. For the most part unless you are a gamer or a power user that laptop is just fine. I am certain it surfs the WEB, checks email and handles word processing well etc... Honestly my hard drive just crashed and I am using a laptop not as good as the one in question while I am trying to retrieve my data and waiting on another hard drive to be delivered.

I agree completely about reinstalling the operating system at this point. But before doing that I would boot with the system disk and try a OS repair. Probably won't work but worth a try to save data. +

I agree with you rj713 on using the recovery console. The reason I didn't suggest that is all modern store bought computers/laptops come with the manufactures version of the operating system that doesn't contain it whether on disk or on a recovery partition.

i think the problem is about u're operating system,

in my opinion reinstalling the operating system might be work,

Thanks for the advice but, as it turns out, I can't get a hold of the boot up disk or a copy of xp. I wondered if, given that, I were to install the 1gb ram it would be sufficient to then install Windows 7 Professional. I do have a copy of that OS but don't know if basic requirements would be met without knowing the size of the hard drive.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

If you have ever used the XP hibernation feature, that creates a rather large file called hiberfil.sys in the root folder of your C drive. The size of the hiberfil.sys file depends on how much RAM is installed in your computer.

Start by just booting into the XP Recovery Console and just deleting the hiberfil.sys file.

Deleting that file is sometimes just enough to get your going again so you can reboot and then start cleaning up.

Note that when you boot into RC, you are limited to navigating only Windows folders - you can't get to any of your personal folders to delete things..

Same thing happened with my system because I let it happen.

There is not enough space to start window & log file is full (no space to increase/include current log user/data). Use Hiren Boot CD. Start by Hiren Boot => Mini XP/Windows7 => & delete some data from your Boot Drive (C), restart & it will work.
