Onkyo TX-8255 noisy volume control

Hi,

Unfortunately the volume control tends to be noisy when changing the volume. I've been in contact with Onkyo and they said that they have the part in stock but aren't able to sell to me directly. They said that a service center would be able to order the part. So the part they said I need is:

"We do have that part 5104334Y, it is priced at $12.20." (part# R641 from schematic)

I've tried several sources to try and buy this but none will sell to me directly. I don't know why. It's a relatively easy repair and souldn't need a service repair facility to get fixed -- I'm perfectly capable.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can purchase this part?

Thanks

Steve,

Usually a noisy volume knob on Home Audio Recievers or Amplifiers is caused by dirty contacts inside of the volume wheel. On my own personal reciever I was able to clean these by rapidly changing the volume (twisting the knob back and forth) for about 5-10 minutes, the noise should clean up over time.

Hope this helps,

Charlie

Hi Charlie,

I know the cause of the problem and yes "rapidly changing the volume (twisting the knob back and forth)" does alleviate the problem *temporarily* -- but after a day or so it's back and I do the twisty thing again. Since, in my case, this doesn't permanently fix it I decided replacing the part is a more permanent solution. So thanks for your reply but what I really want is a way to order this part.

Steve

I've found a couple of sources, but they seem to be all out

1. https://north.pl/karta/5104334y-potencjo...

2. https://encompass.com/item/5860386/Onkyo...

Perhaps, call the above suppliers to see if they can get their hands on one directly from Onkyo.

The other option is to search for a service center in your area: https://www.onkyousa.com/Support/service.... Most of the service centers are private businesses, and if you call them, usually they are willing to order parts for you (with a small pass through charge).

Also, check here: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R4.... You can get another TX-8255 for $25-50, and can use it for parts.

Thanks for your research. Yeah, I've already been down those paths. I guess I should have made that clear so you wouldn't have gone on the same wild goose chase. I'm posting here mainly because of this sites strong "right to repair" advocacy. I want to repair this myself! And yeah I thought about buying another unit but I'd rather just keep this one out of a land fill. That's way more laudable than adding more waste to the environment. So, thanks anyway -- I'm still searching . . .
