Swap 2012 Logic Board for 2014 Logic Board: Is it possible?

So, I bought this iMac on the eBay, the guy claimed it was only a not working PSU.

I replaced the PSU, I'm sure there's line output but no diagnostic lights show up. So instead of harvesting for a Late 2012 logic board, can I directly search for a 2013/14/15 one?

Sorry no. Apple altered the later designs of both the power supplies and logic boards so you can't mix and match things with yours.

With the display off you should see the onboard diagnostic LED's are any turning on when you plug in the power cord?

Block Image

  • LED 1 - Indicates that the trickle voltage from the power supply is detected by the main logic board. This LED will remain ON while the iMac is connected to the AC power. The LED will remain on even when the computer has been shut down or put to sleep. The LED will turn off only if the AC power is disconnected or the power supply is faulty.
  • LED 2 - Indicates that the main logic board has detected proper power from the power supply when the computer is turned on. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the power supply is working correctly.
  • LED 3 - Indicates that the computer and the video card are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is communicating properly with the video card. If LEDs 1 and 2 are ON and you heard the startup sound, but LED 3 is OFF, then the video card might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.
  • LED 4 - Indicates that the computer and the LCD display panel are communicating. This LED will be ON when the computer is turned on and the video signal is being generated. If the LED is ON and there is no image on the LCD display panel, the LCD display panel or inverter might be installed incorrectly or need replacement.

Nope. No diagnostic leds lit at all, I have no idea how to test the power supply to know if they're working properly or not, but with a digital induction test screwdriver I could see that the power was reaching the logic board.

Check the AC plug connection as well as the wire harness to the logic board.

Checked, they're plugged in. No diagnostic lights lit whatsoever, checked the logic board and there's no sign of shorts on it as well.

Then you're back to a bad power supply. Are you sure the replacement was good from the start?

If you are very sure then you'll need to get down and dirty with a DVM and a good schematic and board drawings to trace out the power lines as all I can think of is a short in the logic board.

Nothing smoking or smelling burnt or visually damaged? You will likely need to pull the logic board to check the other side.

I can't be 100% sure about the PSU because I can't test it on another computer. The PSU is new, and the test screwdriver says it has power output on it. I'll need to find a DVM do to a proper test, but that will take me some days.

And nothing smokes or smells burnt in the logic board (nor the PSU). No visual damages as well.
