MacBook Pro will not power on | Water damage

Hi all,

I have a late-2013 MacBook pro 15" that has had some liquid damage. I believe it was aftershave that leaked in a bag while traveling.

Took to Apple and they said around i believe $795 for the fix. So looking to do the fix myself.

Symptoms:

-Will not boot. I did leave it plugged in for about 15 minutes it did turn on briefly to the start up with fans on high and shut off after the Apple startup bar went about halfway across the screen.

-Dissembled the macbook and notice the I/O board with the SD card slot, HDMI and USB had a little corrosion and some mold on the underside. The I/O board cable had the red water damage indicator but no other signs of corrosion or damage.

-Took out the entire logic board. Flipped it around and couldn't find any corrosion or damage

-Battery: under the battery sticker where the battery control chips are there was some corrosion and both indicators were red. The indicators on the battery itself are white.

What i tried:

- Replace the I/O board with a known working one.

-Replaced the I/O board cable with a known working one

-took out logic board and placed it into a different working late 2013 MacBook pro with a known good battery. It powers on only when the Magsafe was plugged in as well as the battery connected. I could unplug the magsafe after the screen powered on and the computer would stay on. I did notice that i got the blinking folder with a question mark. I wanted to test to make sure it could run off a good battery. I couldn't get past the blinking folder, even after replacing the SSD with a known good one.

- Did an SMC and PRAM reset. On the original computer in its original case the SMC blinks to amber then to green. Noticed that when i moved it to the known good computer case it would power up automatically without pressing the power button but only when the battery and magsafe were connected.

Note: No other water damage indicators were tripped on the logic board.

I have another exact same model A1398 Late-2013 MacBook pro that works flawlessly.

I figured i would need to replace the battery but i wanted to make sure it was not the logic board as i don't think it would be cost-effective to replace it. But comparing the 2 logic boards from a working macbook pro and the one from the damaged on, even under a microscope i cannot find any differences between the two; but i may be missing something.

So i'm at a bit of a loss of what to do now. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Update 2018.05.02

Replaced the battery. Powers on only when the MagSafe and battery are connected.

I can unplug the MagSafe and the computer stays on.

I get the blinking folder with the ? I read that I need to swap the SSD potentially. So I did that and it still comes up with that. Attempted SMC and PRAM resets.

Fast and simple answer if you wanted someone to say something. I would replace that Power Supply as it sounded like you didn't yet. Replacing anything to fix it would be easier than the 700$ fix.

If I were you as well, I would tell Apple what you said here and make them lower the price! That's an outrageous price tag!

You have pretty much tested everything I would of. The only thing that would make logical sense would be the board, PSU and hard drives, especially since you stated it turned on shortly and turned back off. Resulting into some form of circuit going out.
