What Next? It's not the battery

I'm starting a new thread (again) because I fear my latest wrinkle got lost in comments.

To wit: The computer doesn't boot on it's own. I've replaced and recalibrated the battery. I've done the Hardware Test - every thing comes though fine. I've run Coconut Battery. No problems. But only if I remover the battery cable and then reattached does it boot on it's own.

After all this I'd hate to have to take it to a shop now. Could it be the power button itself? How do I test that? What else might it be?

Thanks so very much.

Annamarie

Did you happen to reset the SMC and PRAM? Follow these steps to do so and see if that helps, otherwise it could be board level damage.

SMC RESET

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

PRAM RESET

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

Yeah - these things have been done. Board as in what kind of board?

Go back to your other question as it has the answer ;-}

The main logic board, it's possible that the SMC chip or one of the charging MOSFET have been damaged.
