Dropped laptop wont power on, only lights power on briefly.

Hello!

First I want to say I love this place, and thank you all for the time and quick responses!

HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED:

My mom dropped her HP Elitebook Folio 9470M, and now it won't power on. When the charger is plugged in, only the keyboard lights and charging light power on for a brief moment before powering back off. Without it plugged in, it does nothing.

Any idea what this is, and why it's happening?

I was suspecting hard drive damage, but I'm new to this, and I'm probably wrong.

Thanks,

-Liz

Hi @wheeljack ,

Was it turned on, when it was dropped?

If so any 'moving" parts may have been affected, i.e. fan and HDD (and dvd drive if operating at the time)

Best course of action is to open the laptop and check what has happened. Perhaps something has obviously come loose or is broken (hopefully not).

Here is a link to the service manual, which should be of some help. (click on the I'm not a robot security check and then on the green Get Manual link next to it. Then select either blue Download PDF or View in Browser link that shows up next.

If nothing is obvious, start with a barebones system. Remove battery, remove HDD, remove ODD (optical disc drive), check that RAM is installed OK, plug in and turn on charger and try to start the laptop. If it starts OK, it will stop because there is no HDD but should not power down.

Good luck.

Hello,

Thank you for the speedy reply. We've bern busy, so it took awhile.

We've taken the computer apart and made sure everything was secure and installed. Still nothing.

My mother removed the HDD, battery, and it doesn't have an ODD. The RAM is installed. When she plugs in it, and powers it on in this condition, its keyboard, power, wifi, battery charging, and mute lights on turn on. Aswell as the fan. Then the keyboard lights turn off, leaving only the caps lock light on, and it stays on. The screen doesn't seem to power on at all.

When the battery and HDD are installed, the same as above happens. HOWEVER the HDD light turns on, then turns back off, and then flickers.

Hopefully I didn't make this too confusing. X_X

Thanks,

-Liz

Hi @wheeljack ,

OK stick with the barebones system for the moment and have the charger switched on and connected.

I'm assuming that the laptop stays powered on now, is this correct?

When you start the laptop press the F10 key soon after starting (before the keyboard lights disappear) and check if you get into the BIOS menu screen area.

If there is nothing on the screen, use a torch and shine it at an angle close to the screen to check if you can detect an image at all.

If you can't, then you may have a faulty video cable, a faulty video cable connection (behind the display as you've already checked the motherboard end I assume) or a faulty display. I'm assuming that the motherboard GPU (or CPU as the case may be) is OK because you should get 'beeps' at startup for a faulty video processor

If you can detect an image then you have a backlight problem. This could be either a faulty backlight power supply from the motherboard, a faulty video cable, a faulty video cable connection, a faulty display or a faulty lid switch.

Don't know if an external monitor works before OS installed but you could also try connecting the HDD back again (or leave it out and try) and connect an external monitor to see if it shows a display at all.
