MacBook Air early 2014 running slow and sound stuck on mute

My early 2014 11" macbook air started running extremely slow and now the volume doesn't work, even through headphones or bluetooth it still won't work.

I have tried:

  • Connecting earbuds/ headphones/speakers via analog and bluetooth
  • Resetting the SDRAM
  • Resetting the SMC

Whenever I toggle the sound it shows the speaker sign with a circle with a cross through it where you would usually see the sound bar.

I have no idea why it's running so slow, either. I have plenty of free storage and have ran antiviruses and that made it a little better, but not by much.

I have not damaged or dropped it, and all this seemingly came out of nowhere about 6 months ago.

UPDATE:

The charging cable works, but the indicator does not shine on the charger anymore.

Is my laptop slowly descending into !&&*? Should I just give up and build a PC?

Well I'm not sure building a PC from scratch is any better ;-}

I think you likely need two parts here. Your I/O board has the DAC logic (sound) so it may need to be replaced. In addition the cable that interconnects the I/O board to the main logic board may need replacing as well.

Thank you very much for the help, Dan. I truly appreciate it.

Should I do this myself or should I take my laptop to a professional? There's someone who goes by the name "The iDoctor" near me, and he's a well-respected repairman. (Is that what you call it?) Anyways, I'm asking because I'm not exactly the most handy.

I think you can handle this just use care with the connectors.
