The Early 2009 Mac Pro—also known as the Mac Pro 4,1—introduced Intel's Nehalem architecture to Apple's line of professional desktop computers in March 2009. The Mac Pro 5,1 used the same interior design but received further CPU updates in 2010 and 2012.

3 Ram Slots not working after 5,1 upgrade and processor install

Mar 31, 2018

Maybe you can help. I did this upgrade on MacPro 4, 1-Did the firmware upgrade to 5,1. Completed the hardware install as listed above with 3.33 ghz processor. Started it up and only one of the Ram in working. Red LEDS on next to the back 3 ram slots. Switched around the Ram (although they are all the same for both the 4,1 & 5,1 models) to no avail. So I have only the #1 Ram slot working. Did the Pram reset a number of times. Did I screw up the board plane? Is that possible? I was extremely careful. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

How did you do the EFI update? With what software? What was the operating system you were using and did you upgrade it? Exact what year model do you have and what processors are you running?

The EFI update went fine. Did the SIP disable in El Capitan in a Mac Pro 4,1-

Result 5,1. Fine.

Figured out the cause. One of the very, very tiny pins for some reason got bent on the periphery of the center of the CPU (on the processor tray). I was very careful- So I can not for the life of me figure out how this happened. After attempting to straighten the pin and booting up I got only 1 RAM slot not working. 3 is much better than 1 working. I took it apart about 4 times and I got the same result.

They are very fragile and so small- I needed a jeweler's loupe to do the job.

I didn't want to chance it another time.

It being a back up Mac Pro- I'm accepting this problem. Bought more RAM - so I making up for the lost slot.

Thanks for your answer.
