Short Circuit? Poor Test?

Just recently my iPhone 6 stopped functioning. I had to buy a new screen after I spilled water on my iPhone and it didn't turn on. I then did a reboot by holding skeep/wake button for 3 seconds then holding the home button. The apple logo showed up. I was able to use my iPhone, but I noticed a few things: one, the phone was sensitive, if I put it down on the table normally the screen would immediately turn purple and turn to look black, but if you looked closely it was just a really dark purple (occurred over the whole screen at the same time). Second, my iPhone's camera was messed up (Not the screen camera). Taking a regular picture without flash was fine, but a picture with flash would result in a really dark photo. I decided these problems did not bother me so I didn't do anything about them, but instead bought a new screen to see if it would fix the sensitivity.

When the phone would turn purple then really dark all I had to do most of the time is click the sleep/wake button and then click it again and the home screen would be back to place. I had to do this multiple times sometimes. The screen would still show the dark color after doing the sleep/wake a few times. However sometimes the iPhone would get stuck on the dark screen. I would hard reset it and then reboot it (doing this a couple of times as it sometimes didn't work the first time).

One day I put my iPhone on the table normally and as usually it turned purple and then black and stuck there. I tried turning on and off however my lock screen didn't show up. I thought "Oh just hardreset and then reboot." I did that a few times and it did not turn on. I then left it for 80 minutes (school periods) and then tried it again in the next class. The phone turned on! But soon after, I put my iPhone down again and it did the same exact thing. I just hard reset the iPhone and did not try rebooting as it turned after the 80 minutes I didn't touch it. I tried again before my practice and my iPhone did not turn. I tried about 2 and a half hours later and it still didn't turn on.

I gave my iPhone to my neighbor and over the weekend he said it was short circuited most likely at the battery port for the flex cable because I didn't unplug the battery when I removed the screen before I gave it to him. I'm thinking that the iPhone couldn't just stop working one day. If I hard reset it before removing the screen, how can a current be moving if nothing is being used for power? Also he said he tried different screens and battery's, but it looks like he didn't use my homebutton the hard reboot. Also the backplate flex cable is broken so the home button wouldn't work anyway.

Any insight or feedback?

Thanks!

With water damage, you have to decontaminate the logic board before doing anything else, otherwise there will be latent issues down the road. This is exactly what happened here. Until the water damage is properly addressed, you will always have problems.

You could try to clean it yourself:

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board (follow this guide)
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, most of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

A professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to recover your phone or the data because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board. Many shops have a no fix/no fee policy so you don't have to spend money to find out if the phone is fixable or not.

What is evidence of a short cicuit though? Also I don't have to desolder anything correct?

You have to probe the logic board with a multimeter to test for shorts. As for the cleaning I suggest above, you don't have to desolder the shields but it is highly recommended and that is what a reputable shop would do for a proper decontamination.

Hello Christian,

On the iPhone 6, voltage is present at the backlight anode of the LCD connector the moment a battery is connected to the phone. The phone does not need to be on. This is how many people blow the backlight circuit - by trying to connect a new screen while the motherboard is powered.

However this is not your problem. The backlight would be permanently dark if the issue occurred during installation. Your multiple intermittent problems are the result of the original water damage and/or a defective new screen.

A phone may survive water damage in the sense that it is not completely dead after the fact. However, many components that are damaged by corrosion may become unreliable or eventually fail completely with time.

To make your phone reliable again you must address the initial water damage by completely disassembling the phone, removing the motherboard, de-solder the metal shields from the motherboard, then clean the entire surface area under those shields. This is a process best left to someone who is familiar with using hot air for soldering. Additionally, you may need access to an ultrasonic cleaner to aid in the cleaning.

Beyond that, any additional troubleshooting would require a general knowledge of how to read the schematics for your phone's motherboard, as well as experience in replacing micro-soldered components on the printed circuit board.

So apply heat to shield and clean with isopropyl? I was thiking of studying the schematic but thats alot. Hopefully the cleaning will work. No need to desolder other parts righ.
