My Xbox one S turns off after a couple of minutes have gone by and I don’t know why. I went online and read what the problems may be but it continues to turn off

da

Any updates because I think it could be the power cable or fan or battery supply but I have no idea

da

I changed the power supply and the heat sink but no luck at this point I think their is something wrong with the motherboard.

da

looking back at the video posted I notice your fan starts up and mine doesn't do that at all I as well will try the power supply and new cord soon

da

You’re fan is clogged or broken, mine did this and I went out and bought a small house fan that I lay on top of the vent.

You probably have a short on the 12V rail. There are some circumstances where a bad hard drive can cause power off after a couple seconds, but if the fan isn't even spinning it could be anything from a short on the mosfets, or even a shorted GPU.

Hello friends, so I had this EXACT same problem with my Xbox. I’m not sure why it was happening but I what I tried to do is take a blow dryer on max heat and put it over the fan area for about 10-20 seconds and then try turning on the Xbox. IT WORKED! I’m not sure why, but I really suggest trying it if you have the same issue as OP.

This worked. Its actually an old school trick for solid state devices. I took the xbox and put it up undisturbed for the summer because I wanted my kids active.

Lo and behold I set it back up and light came on the immediately off.

I was furious. I don't fix things I smash them. Soooo... Thanks bud.

Saved me a few hundred.

Oh Jesus my xbox doesn’t even u turn on now somebody please do help

Thankyou thankyou thankyou sosososo much.it worked i was so frightened but it worked.you are god thanks

da

EVERYONE! STOP BLOW DRYING YOUR XBOX!! This performs a relflow of the solder underneth the main apu. while this fixes some sytems, they usually only work for a few of days, hours, or even mins! The other problem is that you are not only reflowing the apu, your also reflowing things like the south bridge, and outher chips. This can cause MAJOR problems, and is bad. So dont blow dry your xbox. send it in to microsoft, or, take it to your local game console repair shop.

This is typical a protection either in the power supply - you need to reset it. But in the video it is obvious that the fan is not spinning, the fan in the XBox One S spins immediately after startup.

I have the same issue. I already replaced the power cable and power supply and neither one of them worked. I continued to look into it and a lot of people are saying the GPU is most likely fried.

da

If the fan doesn't start up right away put a blow dry on it for about a min and it will start up right away. The fan that comes with the xbox one s are having a lot of issues

da

The blow dryer on cold trick didn't work for me. The fan pulsed a few times and then stopped.

Pressing power makes the start up and then shut down sound 1 second apart. (Sometimes more or less but very short timing.)

PSU 11.94V, White Light, Start Beep, Then Turn Off Beep

I then proceeded to try to hot air rework the MOSFETs. I think I need to buy new ones.

I did a multimeter reading on the power rail for the CPU / GPU and they read 0.2 or 0.7 ohms or something VERY low, like a short circuit.

So it is likely that the power protection circuit kicks in as Al van der Laan says.

This might not be a simple fix. :|

I just bought a xbox one x today and mine is doing that straight out the box,

Press the power button it lights up beeps then 5 secs later it turns off

rang m$ and went through trouble shooting but nothing and he said hes never heard of this issue

da

I’ve had mine for one day. Played for a little when I got. Came home from work today to play and nothing. I’ve tried everything. All the tricks. Blow dryer, switching hdmi port on tv and unplugging power cord. Nothing. What could be the problem?

The blower thing worked for me. I have a thing called the CompuCleaner, basically a hair dryer w/o the heating element. I just blasted it all around the vents in the console for a few seconds and the Xbox finally would boot up.

The HDD is on the same power line as the HDMI Port, so if the HDD has failed the Xbox will not remain on and will give no dispaly. My issue was that the xbox turned on for a few seconds, I had no display, then it just turned off again. After replacing the HDD it tuned on directly to the system error screen as I did not have the OS installed on the new HDD. Hopefully that works for some of you.

*Part1*

Oh, my, god, this was the issue on mine, so, to ble clear, my symptons were the same as this dude @Ryan Gilbert

My xbox turned on, sounded the beep, and fan spinning.

After a few secconds it just turned itself off, this was like 20-30 secs.

Power supply was not the issue since i bought a new one because i thought mine was busted because the green led was not turning on, so I thought the psu died, but after all this I now know it is only the led, the orange led turned on when connecting it to an outlet and if shorted the red one would come on.

So, after i bought a new psu just to test this, same behaviour but with a green led while the xbox was on.

da

*Part 2*

I returned that psu confident that the problem was the motherboard, maybe a reballing was needed or a simple reflow as many sugested here (that is what you do with the blowdrier on high heat) but, before trying a reflow or reballing, always exhaust your options first, so, when i read that the hdmi and hdd were on the same power rail I was like hmmmm, tried unplugging the hdd but if no hdd is detected, same thing happens, so, probably this hdd died and prevented the console from turning on. Then, I just popped in an ssd (probably could have plugged ANY working hdd or ssd and would have had the same thing) and the error code showed, but at least i have a picture now and know i have a working chip and in general motherboard (probably) now i only need to load on some disk the OS and boom, bob's your uncle. And, to be extra clear, my xbox is the first gen xbox one, the one with the external psu.

Hey John,

I currently have the same issue with my Xbox and I just noticed that as soon as you turn it on the fan tries to run and stops which is telling the system that the fan is not working and to prevent it from overheating it shuts off. I thought it was a power supply issue also and replaced it. I still have the same exact issue, so Thanks for your video because you seem to have helped me see what the issue may be and for 20 bucks I think it is worth a shot. Hope this helps!

I had this issue too. Would turn on my xbox one S the fan would kick on then a few seconds later it would power down. My unit was way past warranty so I decided to look into repairing it myself. After watching about 2 hour worth of xbox dismantle and possible repair videos I felt confident enough to take a look inside. A few specialty tools are required and definately a decent level of patience. I completely dismantled the unit into all of its pieces. Dusted everything with canned air. Inspected for any obvious burnt out pieces or components. What I found was the heat sync had dried out the thermal paste between the two units. After cleaning the old paste off, reapplying new, and then reassembling. My xbox has worked for three months now with no issues. The most helpful video I found was (Xbox One S Disassembly and Replacing Thermal 2016) by Geek Sauce or (Xbox One S Detailed Assembly - Replacing Thermal Paste) by TronicsFix. These videos offer helpful tips on dismantle and cleaning components. Hope this helps someone else out there. It was hard to find an answer outside of turn it off then back on or try a hair dryer non-sense.

I don't know why this is happening I never touched the fan but I will see if I can replace it because I cannot play now maybe it's because I play for about 16 to 18 hours a day because I'm too young for s job but it never overheats it's always fine and maybe a bit warm but not hot I don't have money for this plus my parent won't help me because my uncle always says that it's my fault yet it's not. I will see if there is Free solution to it.

Does it let you get to the reset menu?

  1. Press and hold the BIND button (located on the left side of the console) and the EJECTbutton (located on the front of the console), and then press the Xbox  button on the console.
  2. Continue holding the BIND and EJECT buttons for 10-15 seconds.
  3. Listen for two “power-up” tones a couple of seconds apart

If done correctly it should take you to the menu screen. There you can properly restart it or reset it.

I have solved this issue on my console, I took all the covers off of the Xbox and connected the power supply and disconnected the hard drive and turned it on but it still turned off then I unplugged the disk drive and turned it on again and to my amazement it stayed on so I then tried to connect the disk drive while it was on and it turned off again so I unplugged the disk drive and left it unplugged.. problem solved

I’ve had exactly the same problem with my Xbox One S. I’ve tried absolutely everything that was on my hands, even changing the power source for another non-Xbox one (a normal PC power source). And nothing worked.

I did the opening, the cleaning, putting a big fan (ventilator) on top of it, running it without the fan at all, replacing the hard drive, everything… or that is what I’ve though…

… until I saw this post and the message from Ryan Gilbert here above. And voilà!

It seems that the problem is the internal circuits providing the current to the Disk-Drive, because I can clearly see that when the Disk-Drive power cable is disconnected, the Xbox runs fine (to be honest, is still under test), and with it connected, it stops.

It seems that it’s only the power line for the Disk Drive and not for the HDD, although I can’t be sure as I’m still testing it, and I took the chance to change to an SSD which needs less current, so if the problem was there for the HDD maybe it’s no longer for the SSD.

The positive thing is that keeping the SATA cable connected and feeding the drive with an external source (or bridging the connection directly to the main power source) perhaps the problem is solved and we do not lose the Disk-Drive unit. However, I have not yet tested that.

The happiness last for 10 minutes… It turned off again…

da

Well, I can now definitely confirm that the problem is the current source to the drives (both HDD and Disk). Unplugging the power cables and feeding the HDD (SSD in my case) with an external 5V source shows the Xbox running smoothly for at least the last 10 minutes, including playing one Cupheads level.

Regarding how I feed the HDD, it is more or less easy: the cable black and yellow are the grounds, the red and blue are both feeding constantly 5V.

Now I will need to find how the Disk-Drive is feeded, because it has more cables and it looks that different Voltage levels.

Most of these problems sound like the faceplate. (power button/disc eject) I was having the powering on and off randomly problem like most of the people on here. Make sure you eject any disc in your drive first and then remove the faceplate and ribbon entirely. Replacement ribbons are like $9 with the adhesive. It seems like the ribbons get faulty or the power button itself kinda melts from heat and leaves a residue on the ribbon creating an almost circuit. (I watched mine power on and off untouched for 3 minutes randomly) After removing the faceplate entirely my console has been running for around 2 hours without an issue. Since you have to disassemble it anyways, gently blow out your vents, board, and fan. (including the vents on your power supply brick) I feel like most of these issues are on the surface fixes, but this is microsoft we are talking about.

If your console beeps and then turns off with out the fan turning on, your console thinks its going to over heat and turns off. More then likely one of two things is happening

  • your fan is busted
  • your thermal paste needs replacement (very likely)

I would try the paste first as it is the more affordable repair and very easy. Follow this guide on how to take it apart. Clean off your crusted paste with 99% isopropyl alcohol and a clean toothbrush or non-static cloth. Replace it with a pea-sized bit of thermal paste (available at Best Buy and the sort on short notice). Put it together and power it up. Just did this for a customer and it worked.

If this is not a solution, source your fan using parts number located on the side of the fan component. In the unlikely even it is your power supply that has gone bad, use the same method to source that part.

Lots of people saying a hair drier or heat gun or canned air as a temporary fix. This is a temporary fix and I don’t recommend it.

Be sure to keep your console in a clean and ventilated area (read: not on the floor where cat hair and cockroaches can get to it).

Hope this is helpful to any future peeps.

This websites’ comment section design reads like the worst image forum I’ve ever seen. And it seems like there are a lot of desperate cries for help instead of searching youtube for step by step visual walkthroughs of how to fix this problem various ways.

My xbox one began turning off within a couple minutes everytime. Luckily for me I suppose, when I would turn it back on, it said the system had to shut down to prevent from over heating. Although I had plenty of ventilation and keep my vents clean, at least the box was telling me what the problem was. I then determined the fan was still working fine while the xbox was on, so I took the next logical approach and replaced the thermal paste from atop my hot ass cpu. This is basically at the heart of your xbox, you will have to disassemble it basically all the way down, but there are probably hundreds of video walkthroughs on how to do it. ->continued on next comment...

da

I found a short video, and fixed my Xbo-One within an hour because I was unfamiliar with the internal components. You need 2 different size pentalobe screwdrivers for this job, and maybe a phillips I forget. I ordered the pentalobes in a set on internet for like 10 dollar. The thermal paste is even cheaper. And thats how I stopped my xbox from turning off every minute.

Unless its under warrantee, dont be afraid to fix Sh**t like this yourself. Just be careful because some things are delicate inside and might break if you are drunk, or just not an electronics technician. But its simple kinda all like legos.

Another good example I have is the time I spilled water on my macbook air and killed both the keyboard and touchpad. Not under warrantee, I took it into the apple store and a genius barkeep took it to the back, came back and told me to give him like $450 for replacement parts and labor. The conclusion to this story and probably my time spent being active on this website will continue in my next comment. ->

da

So after hearing how much it was going to cost to fix my small computer, I decided I’d rather live without a computer until I saved up enough to buy a new one. So life was basically shi****t for about a year and a half. My life was like he**ll. It was like taking a $h*t in He//. Or It was like eating a piece of Šh!t from h£|| for 18 months. Thats what it felt like.

Anyway when I got done eating the SHturdIT sandwiches, I realized I could just do the repairs myself. Now I had some limited experience with replacing parts on my electronics, so I knew that with a brand like Steve Jobs CRT Monitor/Tower-Combo inc, it’s best to use the official OEM parts as opposed to the nearly identical counterfeit parts, otherwise you run the risk of transforming your techno music amplification device in to a brick in the pants. And no, I don’t mean like harry potter in the first one when professor queerman had an evil man attached to the back of his face while harry played hot potato with himself, laughing at the Fu¢*ng idiot-...>>

da

anyway harry sets the “defense against the dark lord” teacher on fire face first. But he had a rock in his pocket that’s the point.

Luckily, the Steven Jobs Techno BoomBox isn’t as picky when it comes to OEM trackpads and connector ribbons for the keyboard, so I bought those on internet too. I think I spent a total of $50 for the parts required to fix my sorcerers stone book pro. While acceptable in this case, you wont always be able to get away with using non OEM parts if you plan to do it yourself, however Steve Jobs doesnt sell the OEM parts to the public. So you probably shouldnt attempt to repair your personal techno phonogram yourself if you are still under warrantee. Just ask professor purple turban !&&* tell you all about it.

All that sh;;*t I just said is more important than Fuc***uck. But for those of you who actually held a blowdryer on high to your xbox series 360, you guys could probably read all that everything I just typed, hella times over. Meanwhile, turning in the grave are the lords Windows 98, MS DOS, Space Cadet Pinball etc Billy Gates Himself.

da

Here's tough one... My 1 y/o Xbox One S Battlefield Edition started to act up. It will go to green Startup screen, and then it turns off after 30 seconds from the time I power up. I have tried many things such as a different power cord. I took it apart and dusted every component without removing metal grating for the fan, that component I dusted without removing because of the thermal adhesive. I'm really at a loss and cannot figure this out. Any help out there?

Sounds like it's the apu which you can not attempt too do unless you have the proper tools and knowledge otherwise you will totally kill your machine..

This has just started happening to my Xbox One S Digital Edition. Whether I press the button on my controller, or press the power button on the console, the light on the console goes bright white, then dims, then it shuts off. The timeframe from pressing the button to it turning off is literally like 2-3 seconds. I doubt it is an overheating problem as it will happen sometimes when it’s been off for over 24 hours. I do notice I don’t hear the fan spin up at all when it shuts right off.

I haven’t tried anything other than to remove the power cord for like 10 seconds and plug it back in. Sometimes this works immediately, sometimes not. Then the Xbox will work perfectly for a few weeks, then it starts happening all over again. I’ve tested the power cable with a multi-meter and the proper voltage is coming through. I haven’t opened up my Xbox yet but it may come to that.

The hair dryer solution worked for me! I first took my Xbox One S (1TB version) and blew it all out with an air can and wiped it down with vinegar and water. That didn't work but I still think it was a good idea to blow all the dust out of it with canned air (Dust Off) or an air compressor!

Then I put a hair dryer on it and blew right where the fan is located for about 45 seconds on high heat. I saw the fan spin so I thought, heck, maybe it worked. Sure enough, I powered it up and watched a preview and checked some apps and everything works great. I hope it lasts and I'm shocked this worked.

I hope this helps and best of luck to anyone with this problem because it's seriously annoying especially if you've had it for 5 years and paid the original $499 price.
